Hi Axer,

The Range Rovers have permanently engaged Four Wheel Drive. If the tires are different sizes, they're spinning at different rates. Or trying to.

If you were off-road, it wouldn't matter too much, but on paved road, where the tires tend to grip not slip, these different rates subject a locked drive train to tremendous stress. This can bind up the gearing in the transfer case. Hopefully after only ten minutes, no permanent damage was done.

You can relieve this stress by jacking one end completely off the ground. Front or back. As the tires lose their grip on the road, you should see them spin slightly. That's good news. Once released you should be able to move again.

While it's in the air, you should probably put the original size tires back on. So choose which end to jack accordingly.

Comment me back to let me know how it goes.
Good luck

Mike

    Hi Axer,
You didn't actually say and I'm curious if my response got you going again. If what I suspected to be the problem, actually was?

And if so, did it it Fix You? Appreciate you taking the time to rate.

In reference to you question about gear damage in the transfer case, the test is easy:
If you put it in LOW gear, does it move? No grinding or other odd noises, etc.
If it functions normally, I'd have to say it's nothing more than a burned indicator and coincidence.

If not, you'd have to post back with the symptoms.

I'm afraid I don't have enough experience with diesel engines to properly address the engine problems you are having. You should post a new problem so someone with more expertise in the area can provide the help you need.

Downsizing winter tires too far?

For tyre sizes do you understand what all numbers mean? I've described them below just in case you don't.
If your changing tyre width you need to adjust the side wall size. Changing the rim size will also need the same adjustment. Generally a narrower tyre will need a taller side wall to keep the wheel size correct. The wrong tyre size will affect your speedo reading and affect the handling and grip of the vehicle.
To drop to a 16 inch rim the 225/55R17 would have to be either a 255/50R16 or a 215/60R16.
To go up in rim size the 195/70R16 would have to be a 255/45R17 or a 285/40R17.

Using the 225/55R17 - 6.5J x17 as an example.
Tyre size.
- 225 is the width of the tread on the tyre in mm.
- /55 is the side wall measurement as a percentage.
- R is the tyre is a 'Radial' construction type.
- 17 is the rim diameter in inches.
Rim details.
- 6.5 is the width of the rim between the points where the tyre attaches to the rim.
- J is the code for the shape of the seal edge.
- 17 is the rim diameter in inches.

Can i replace a 265-70-R17 with a 255-70-R17

You can, unless it is 4 wheel drive. if it is 4 wheel drive, it will be hard in your transfer case having a different size in the mix. if not, or if you are changing all 4 tires, your seedometer will just read a bit faster

My front tires are bigger than my back tires on my 1997 nissan pathfinder is that dangerous?

Your tires should all be the same size, especially since this is a 4 wheel drive vehicle-Change them ASAP.

I had a constant grinding coming from front passenger tire. Replaced Caliper and put the worn pads back on for a day, the constant grinding went away. It would still grind while braking, hitting a bump

It sounds like the brake pads are metal to metal, when you turn the flexing of the wheel makes them touch the rotor and grind. This can rarely be caused by a badly worn wheel bearing as well, have both brakes and wheel bearing inspected.

What is the difference between tire size 255/70 and 265/70

Hello Projocs03,

Tires are typically measured tire width (sidewall)/tire ride height/wheel size. The differences of the two tire sizes you published are .4 of an inch difference in width/sidewall. And about .55 in over all diameter which would impact you revs per rotation. Depending on your wheel size.

Attached is a comparison of the two given the variable of 17" rim.

I added the above link so you can research further or change any variables you need to know. However, the most important thing to understand is the impact of your speedometer. Different sizes will have different impacts. For example going to a bigger tire will show a slower speed on your spedo that your traveling.

Good luck

What size tires does a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport v6 engine use please?

The tire size depends on the vehicle trim level. Below are multiple trim levels and their respective tire sizes.

ES 235/75/15
LS 255/70/16
Limited 255/70/16
XLS 255/70/16
XS 255/70/16

The best thing to do if the vehicle is available is to inspect the tire sidewall for what the current equipment is. There is also typically a sticker in the driver door jamb, center console or glovebox stating the proper tire size & inflation.

2000 ford exploorer v-8 awd eddie bauer edition new wheels and tires new ball joints new tierods new shocks 3 front front end alignments started having a vibration in the front end at about 70+ mph had the...

Hello, I see you may a lot of changes and replaced a lot of parts. We leased an Explorer the same Year as yours. In our case there was a slight noise as well as vibration. The problem was the Front Hub bearings, They were bad at 18000 miles.

There are a few things I want to suggest. The spinning of the wheels on the lift will not load the bearings. A Dyno table can get everything turning with a load on it. As your vehicle is a 4x4, most Dyno's were 2 wheelers. You would have to call to find one for a 4x4.

Next, if the new Hubs do not help, have a look at the rotors. They are also balanced. You can spin balance the Wheel and rotor as a unit with a floor motor. It's not the best way to Balance because tire rotation or even shifting the Wheel on the lugs will UNbalance it. But this method CAN pinpoint a problem if a Balanced tire does not spin true when bolted to the vehicle. You will know the Rotor is off-balance and which axle is causing the problem.

Would be interested to see a Post of what you found.
