Fuel pump won't activate

Took car to a quick lube place and they broke the knock sensor. Not knowing this at the time, I drove away and noticed that it was idling at 2500 rpm. Got home and check pcv valve which they check and found it to loose at the seat into the motor and pushed it in and idle came down to normal. After a while, I wanted to gas up to ready for a 1600 mi. trip. On the way my car suddenly quit and though it would spin fine at starter,it seemed to not pick up gas. I have checked ALL fuses and replaced the main fuel pump fuse under the hood. When a helper turns on the ign. switch, I can't really hear the pump run under the gas tank. I have never had this problem w/ the car ever. I did replace the knock sensor and pig-tail before all this. I also disconnected the + side of the battery for about 15 min. and then reconnected it but still nothing.Shoulda changed oil myself which I usually do.

I'm sure you have installed a fuel pressure gauge and monitored the fuel pressure while the problem is occurring?Another diagnostic tool which is easy to do,is while the problem is occurring, unplug one sensor at a time beginning with the Mass Air Flow first,.if it uses one. Many times, not always, depending on the sensor,if the sensor is taken out of the picture as far as what the PCM is seeing, like unplugging the MAF,the PCM will substitute the missing sensor output with a generic value that will allow the engine to at least run,and if unplugging for example the MAF,the engine idle speed returns to normal, you know you're onto the problem. You didn't mention if the engine ran ok other than the idle problem. As far as checking for vacuum leaks,i use something like brake cleaner or WD 40,more of a liquid, and it does sound like a vacuum leak.Plastic intake manifolds do develop nearly invisible cracks that open up more with heat.Revsisit the possibility. And as for the PCM,it is possible, but more likely a mechanical problem.Lastly, remove an O2 sensor or two before the catalytic convertor, run the engine and see if anything changes.Cheap way to verify the catalytic convertor is flowing and not restricting engine airflow,as i have seen bad cats cause misfire codes and strange problems.Good luck.

SOURCE: My 1996 Olds LSS doesn't idle properly, idling

Your first problem is to find out why the intermittent no-power problem. Honestly, that sounds like a loose conmnection somewhere. check all your grounds for clean and tight conditions Also, battery connections and alternator connections. Double check your power distribution center for any loose wires or poor connections. Once you solve that problem, then you can diagnose the other problems with poor idle and temp. gauge.

I had a Grand Prix one time (basically the same car) that had a problem with the fuel pump harness. This harness plugs into the top of the fuel pump as you know, and into the floorboard underneath the car. Check the floorboard end for corrosion or broken wires.

Hi. I have seen lincolns with 200,000 miles on em.. That said, I am a wee bit suspicious that your had exactly 100,000 miles on it when you bought it. Possible but not likely. Go to a reputable mechanic and see what he says. Shop around. Keep notes so you remember the details. Joe

Knock engine sensor light on truck is hesitating/

Did they replace the knock sensor?Check the wire going to the sensor(knock).Look for a bare place hiting up against something ,grounding it out.Make sure the plug to knock sensor is good. And make sure it is making a good connection,Knock sensors also ground a part of the computer to feed back imformation. This connection is a must, the truck will not perform at all, stumble, miss, and carry on.Sometimes even backfire. If they did not replace the knock sensor, replace it with high quality sensor from NAPA,or oem from dealer. This sensor has to be made perfect,no room for inperfection. The knock sensor is easy to replace, they just screw in a hole in the block. When removing the sensors, nothing will come out such as oil or water, this is a dry threaded hole.It is a bell shaped sensor. If you don`t know which sensor is bad, purchase one.replace one,and if there is no change, replace the other side with the old sensor you just took out,it will be a good one.I hope this helps you,Let us know if it does.
