I finally got around to looking at the problem of no tail lights in the trunk section and found the 4 smaller wires leading up from the left trunk hinge to the rear trunk lights broken. The larger one had the insulation worn through making the conductors visible. I have wired back with new wires of the same gauge using **** connectors to connect.
On testing I had no tail lights or stop lights. After not having back-up lights for years, I now have back-up lights.
I have tested continuity from the farthest **** connector to the first plug connector on the left side of the trunk section, between the plug connector by the current sensor/warning device and the trunk plug, and from the trunk plug to the sockets. They are tested positive.
Questions:
1. Is the current sensor bad, and if so, would is it tested?
2. Is the ground for both the tail and stop lights the same? If so, where is it located?
3. What am I missing?
Thanks. The Lamp Failure module was badly shorted. Spent $10 for a used one, instead of the $225 from Toyota. Did check to make sure that it didn't have any shorts. Plugged it in and still the tail and stop lights don't work. Opened the new module and it had shorted.
Now I have back-up and side running lights, but no tail or stop lights. This includes the stop light in the back window.

I hope that someone can help as my issue on my 93' Camry LE V4 is similar.
Long story short....my instrument panel lights were out, I found that the fuse controlling these lights had blown. During the process of replacing the fuse, the ignition was turned to the "ON" position; thusly causing a spark blowing the new fuse when plugged in. I plugged in a new fuse...without the Brain fart blunder I now have a new issue.
I know have no rear lights or license plate lights when the headlights are on . When the brake is applied, ALL tail lights illuminate as normal (no license plate lights of course), when I let off the brake, the rear main tail lights go out and the only light in the rear comes from the red markers at the extreme corners.
After troubleshooting at the local mechanic, the lamp failure box in the trunk was burned out (opened the yellow box and one wire was burned completely) I purchased a new one on Ebay for $24.00 (all numbers matched perfectly) I installed it and it didn’t fix the issue. When I unplugged the module, it was smelling slightly burnt. I opened it and nothing was burnt out but I purchased another just to make sure.
What do I need to do to resolve this? Anything I need to do before plugging in the new module? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have a definite short in the rear harness somewhere. Does this vehicle have a trailer harness? Are you SURE that the repaired wires on the trunk hinge are all good? That is a VERY common are to have broken wires in tow DIFFERENT locations. Pull ALL of the insulation off and check further. If the Lamp Failure detection module was bad, it would have burnt marks on the circuit board; take it apart & look at it.

This can happen if some desperate soul jams a single element bulb into a dual element socket. Then the dual contacts at the base of the socket get shorted which can apparently burn out the lamp failure module (I saw this happen to a toyota camry lamp failure module 89373). Dual element bulbs have staggered stops and have to be oriented properly to lock them into the base.

There is a short in your wiring.. i would look first near the tail light connector in the trunk.. and around the tail lights. If it blows that quick it is a dead short and you should be able to find it. move wires around and try another fuse.. if it stops blowing look at the last place you were checking the wires.
You will need to check wiring at the sockets, turn lights on and remove the tail lights from tail lens and wiggle bulb to see if they will light up . this is to see if its a connection in the socket.
Another area to check is to open the hood and check the wiring going to rear lights, look toward the driver side trunk hinge and check for broken wire or wires. this is a common area for wire damage. look closely.
Check around the tail lights for rust. There is a dead short somewhere. Could be on the drivers side under the strip just inside the door on the floor. Usually you have to take four to five screws out to expose the wiring. I found one time where the left foot would rest that the wires were rotten causing a short. Electical problems are not fun. Happy hunting.
buy some foam spray from a can spray it around trunk seam bottom not trunk lid. close trunk to let it dry and shape foam. also check for any holes in trunk. remove all padding to look for wholes. spray foam into any holes found. this foam can also be trimmed after it dries and hardens.
I have a 98 Camry and was having problems with tail lights and fuses. I kept blowing a fuse which was making my tail lights not work. I tried paying very close attention to when they would be working and all the sudden not be working. I know it sounded funny, but I told my mechanic that it seemed if I used my trunk, my fuse would blow. Come to find out, the wire was touching the hinges of my trunk. So when I popped my trunk and closed it, it blew my fuse every time.
Open up the trunk and pull back the "carpeting" around the inside of the trunk in the area of the tail light. You may have to remove some tabs and or plastic screws to do this. Once the "carpeting" is pulled back you can get to the three bolts holding the tail light to the body. After removing the screws, gently wiggle the tail light assembly from the body of the car and look for any hooks the may hold the tail light in place. They won't stop you from removing it, but they do hold onto it. They are mostly there for alinment when installing the tail light. The bulbs should be in twist off plugs.
I would look for a wiring short in the trunk at the taillamp area, or, inspect the sockets for the taillamp bulbs for corrosion. In any case, you have a short circuit in the trunk area, also check the wire that comes from the body & goes up the trunk hinge on the driver side; that wire may be chafed, and it may be shorting out. Probably because it blows immediately because the short is now a dead short. The hot wire is completely against the ground not just rubbing. Has the car been hit in the back at any time? Look underneath and see if any wires are hanging down.around the tail light area. Your looking for a wire that is rubbing against metal . Could be inside the trunk behind the covers . God Bless Greg
