2000 Mercury Cougar flickering lights. The alternator is overcharging.

NO ENGINE TOLD ! 2.0 OR 2.5LITER?????????
TH 8TH DIGIT OF YOUR VIN TELLS YOU WHICH ENGINE IS THERE, PLEASE TELL THAT FIRST.
The alternator is overcharging. what makes you think so?
a meter test.?
scan tool shows DTC that said that>?
OK JUST FLICKER,
lights flicker, what light, heads, or charge lamp error
or what? (i guess all)
putting in 3 wrong alternators is painful , there are 2 used, here. on 2 engines
one is pcm controls, other is not.
The 2 engines and matching ALTs:

DURATEC -VE 2.5LITER ONLY

ZETEC-VCT 2.0L ONLY

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. ALT ! NOR ENGINES

DURA HAS 3 FUSES TO BLOW. BOTH ALTS USE THESE FUSES
F30-CJB. 7.5a, CENTERAL JUNCTION BOX.
and F2 =BJB, 15AMP BATTERY JUNC. BOX BJB
AND FB 175 AMP
THE REG IS INSIDE THE ALT HERE, NOT PCM

DID YOU REPLACE THE ALT WITH THE NEG LUG ATTACHED, IF YES, THE 175AMP FUSE IS BLOWN BOOM

ZETEC USES PCM REGULATION

AND SAME 3 FUSES TO FAIL, 1,2,3..

THE 175 FUSE MUST BE GOOD. TOO.

THE CORRECT GENERATOR FOR YOU ENGINE MUST BE USED
THE DURA and zetec alternator gens can NOT be mixed up here ever!

best way to buy any alt is by VIN # code or fail 1/2 the time or even 3times in row. or 175amp is blown
if buying over the counter (a new alt) tell them there 2 kinds used in 2000, tell them the vin 8th code.

98 es 300 read a code of p0420,what could cause this to come up as a false reading?

PO420 & PO430 --are worn out Exhaust Converters

You can research any Generic OBD2 Codes on the
internet & learn more than you need to know

A Converter is only good for 12 years & will only pass
inspection MAYBE for 14 years

O2 Sensor Codes are PO170 thru PO 175, so you
may want to study on your own, as you were given
useless advice

I have a ford v6 3.0 dohc i changed plugs and wires fuel filter and fuel line pressure sensor had five codes come up the car starts properly took for a test drive and ran well but shut off when i stop

Code 191 is fuel pressure range-performance.
Code 172 and 175 are O2 sensors reading rich.
Codes 1132 and 1152 are O2 sensors not switching.
Under normal conditions, the fuel pressure should be around 40psi.
The pressure sensor is reading the pressure is too low or too high.
The O2 sensors should be switching back and forth between lean and rich. They are both staying rich.
Based on that info, I would reason the fuel pressure regulator has failed, or the return line to the tank is plugged.
The engine is getting too much fuel and the computer can't control it.

Check engine light just lit..but the engine runs just fine! I understand that i have to get the car to the shop...but how urgent is it? What might be causing the ligt to lit?

The check engine light monitors the emission system. There are a lot of sensors on your engine that can light up that light.Usally if lights on but car is running fine its a sensor going bad.But it could be somthing simple like loose gas cap or it could be an clogged injector. All these things are checked by your cars computer. For example I have a vw jetta the light would come on every 200 or 300 miles.I have a code reader and it kept coming up fuel rich in bank one, come to find out i had a small exhaust leak before converter, fixed leak and code went away. You can buy code readers online for 50 to 150 bucks.these will tell you what code and you look that code up in a book and it tells you what to look for. There are more exspensive ones that tell you code # and give description of problem but there in the range of 175 and up.The good thing about most of them is you can reset light after you fix problem and if light stays off your good.Beats bringing car to dealer and paying 100 bucks just to read code and then you still have to pay for repairs. If your mechanicly inclined pick your self up one,you will save your self a lot of future headaches.Good Luck.....

I have 95,000 miles on my Grand Mercury LS car. Tonight my engine light came on with 1/2 tank of gas. I checked the gas cap (appeared okay - full tank fill up yesterday before my 175 mile road trip - no...

The check engine light is not a big cause for concern. Most of the time it relates to emmision controls or engine controls, but it will not die on you from one of these conditions. Simply get a auto parts store to pull the code for you and find out what is causing the light to come on. I know Autozone pulls codes for free, once you find out what is tripping the light we can go from there on fixing it. If you do manage to reset the light if the problem is still there the light will return. What happened earlier was the cars computer reseting and relearning the idle speed.
