2000 Mercury Cougar cranks but doesn't start after running fine. I've changed the coil pack and camshaft position sensor and still didn't fix it.

Question edited for clarity and correct spelling of Cougar. Question moved to model category. Jeff provides a great diagnostic explanations video, and the keywords 'Don't make Assumptions', or as I call it the "Let's try replacing this" method of vehicle repair. It is expensive and doesn't work. Electronic diagnosis by a professional grade scan tool computer is the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBUYs539cy4

2000 Mercury Cougar flickering lights. The alternator is overcharging.

NO ENGINE TOLD ! 2.0 OR 2.5LITER?????????TH 8TH DIGIT OF YOUR VIN TELLS YOU WHICH ENGINE IS THERE, PLEASE TELL THAT FIRST.The alternator is overcharging. what makes you think so? a meter test.? scan tool shows DTC that said that>? OK JUST FLICKER, lights flicker, what light, heads, or charge lamp error or what? (i guess all) putting in 3 wrong alternators is painful , there are 2 used, here. on 2 enginesone is pcm controls, other is not. The 2 engines and matching ALTs: DURATEC -VE 2.5LITER ONLY ZETEC-VCT 2.0L ONLY THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. ALT ! NOR ENGINES DURA HAS 3 FUSES TO BLOW. BOTH ALTS USE THESE FUSES F30-CJB. 7.5a, CENTERAL JUNCTION BOX. and F2 =BJB, 15AMP BATTERY JUNC. BOX BJB AND FB 175 AMP THE REG IS INSIDE THE ALT HERE, NOT PCM DID YOU REPLACE THE ALT WITH THE NEG LUG ATTACHED, IF YES, THE 175AMP FUSE IS BLOWN BOOM ZETEC USES PCM REGULATION AND SAME 3 FUSES TO FAIL, 1,2,3.. THE 175 FUSE MUST BE GOOD. TOO. THE CORRECT GENERATOR FOR YOU ENGINE MUST BE USED THE DURA and zetec alternator gens can NOT be mixed up here ever! best way to buy any alt is by VIN # code or fail 1/2 the time or even 3times in row. or 175amp is blownif buying over the counter (a new alt) tell them there 2 kinds used in 2000, tell them the vin 8th code.zet-undefined-undefined-0.jpg

Well that is a good and easy test. The alternator you just replaced is probably bad. Once the vehicle starts its the alternator's job to keep the vehicle running. You need to take that alternator back to the auto parts store and exchange it for a good working one.

I hope this helps you out, if it does please give me a YES that I did help you correct your problem. Thank you.

Replaced battery and alternator on my 2000 mercury cougar still won't hold a charge and replaced the fusible link fuse

I am guessing that it could be the fact that your car is very old here and has died on you and is getting ready to die too. There could also be a problem with the engine and the transmission then too.

Removing alternator bolts on mercury cougar

There are 3 bolts. You'll need a LOT of socket extensions and a car hoist!
and a lot of time and patients.

But an even better idea is to just check the wire connections make sure they are well connected and no gaps on the female connectors if you suspect a bad alt.

My 2000 cougar, i can't

Hi ,
This problem is extremly common. Let me explain something.....
Chances of the cable being broken are very slim. The cable has around 1200 lbs of tensile strength, wheras you can only exert about 30-50 lbs force while pulling the handle inside the vehicle. You can however verify the cable is still attatched by pulling on the handle and feeling behind it with a pair of needle nose pliers to grasp the cable. An extra twist down pull motion at that time can also be achieved to make the cable pull a slight bit beyond its intended travel path. If it pulls very far, it could indeed be detached from the hood latch, but this is highly unlikely. Usually the hood pin gets stuck in the lock due to the fact that people do not lubricate the locks on their car (hood, doors, trunk, rear hatch, etc.). Periodically all these locks , door pins and recievers should be lubricated with white lithium grease and the lube worked in by hand to prevent sticky lock mechanisms. (a squirt of WD-40 into your door locks as well will make them work smoother)
After you have verified your cable is indeed attatched still, push down sharply on the hood and release. This will either reset the lock mechanism or release the hood pin. Try that a couple times, pulling the inside release in between times until your hood pops open. Once open, lubricate the lock in all moving areas and manually work the lock and release a few times to work the grease into the jointed parts to prevent this from occuring again. Do this for all the locks on your vehicle and especially around the pins in the door hinges to reduce wear and insure trouble free lock mechanisms.

My cars engine, battery, and oil lights are on. HELP!

well when the car shuts off or stalls your check engine , oil . battery lights are all going to come on the oil light is telling you there is no oil pressure due to the car not running the battery light is going to come on due to the alternator not pushing any juice because the car is not running and the check engine light also now. check under the car and make sure that your moter did not cut,rip or fray any wires comming from the starter area. this could be a big problem and make lights flicker and the car to run funny.

1993 Cougar V-6: Turn Signal and Heater Van stop working.

Sounds like an ignition switch problem. When they do not work, move the key back and forth just a little bit to see if they come back on.

In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is
