Re-check the electrical connections at the switch sometimes during replacement terminals become bent or even pushed back to prevent contact

Testimonial: "Thank your for your comment. I did make sure to double check the connections, all look ok. "

  • Anonymous Sep 18, 2012

Did that all the connections are fine. My husband said there is a plastic rod that moves up and down below the steering column. Apparently it is broke, you aren't supposed to be able to move it freely. So i guess we get to take the column apart and see if it is actually broke. When you turn the key there is supposed to be some kind of resistance, there is none what so ever. Praying this is going to be an easy fix and not to expensive.

SOURCE: I need to remove the ignition switch from a Ford

no, you have to have the switch in the on position, you either have to drill the ignition out (1/2" drillbit) or chisel the tumblers out of the cylinder... using excessive force may break the column...which is definatly way more $ than a lock cylinder. to be safe i would just use the chisel method... if you drill too far you will ruin the column also

SOURCE: ignition will not start truck

There is a sliding actuator that is in the steering column. It is spring loaded, this is what provides the resistance when you turn the key. It's what the rod that connects to the key lock assembly leads to. The bad news is that you have 2 choices, replace the steering column or destroy the cover to get to it. Sorry to tell you that.

Try the switch on the brake pedal bracket. When this switch gets bumped out of position by the drivers feet it causes difficulties. Check your under-dash fuse panel. Seen that many are bumped and window control relays are half hanging out of fuse panel.

Took my ford focus to a dealer because key would not turn either way. They said it was the tumbler and would have to be replaced. They jusy called and said they installed new tumbler and reprogramed the...

The reason that the key wouldn't turn must have come from a malfunction of the ignition switch or the connecting rod, rather than the just the tumbler. Since the dash lights & gauges work now, at least part of the ignition switch is working, but apparently not the part that's engaged when the switch is turned to the "start" position.
By replacing just the tumbler, the dealership tech would have jiggled the connecting rod just enough to reseat it (and fix the jam that was causing the key to fail to turn in the tumbler), but didn't fix the real problem, which seems to be a worn out ignition switch or worn connecting/actuating rod.

Sometimes it won't start, just clicks. replaced the starter and the battery. power gets to the starter, so don't think it's the ignition switch.

if your power going to starter from ignition switch ,your starter has to be faulty or main wires on starter has bad connection

I have a 2001 ford expdtion and the air only blows out the defrost

It's most likely a vacuum line, look under your hood (close to the cowl panel) for a disconnected, cracked or broken vacuum line.

In some rear cases, it could be the vacuum switch (in dash). Or vacuum diaphragm (under dash).

Hope this helps you ???

Ignition switch replacment

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.

NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

The ignition switch is operated by the key switch. Courtesy of Ford Motor Company. To replace the switch:
  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.
