2001 yukon steering is tight fluids are full no leaks. how can you help ? thanks gk

If your Yukon is not steering properly then you could have a power pump problem, first thing to check is the fluid level and see if the fluid looks dark and brownish. most of the fluids are red in color. but other things to check are the brakes on the front of the truck and the wheel bearings a long with the steering parts just to make sure everything is in order and safe to drive.

have a pressure test done on the pump and if faulty then replace it.

check power steering fluid level, and belt condition & tension, may need replaced or tightened.

check the tension of the belt driving the power steering pump if not real tight it needs replaced turn wheel all way to left then to right listen for a squeeling noise if squeels then you need new power steering pump

Unless the drive belt to the power steering pump is slack, the pump itself is likely worn out. Fluid leaks can be at any part of the power system, but usually it occurs at points that have seals--either the pump shaft, the assist cylinder, or the control unit in the steering system. Spread some newspapers out under all components of the power system when the truck is parked. The leaks will show as red spots on the paper where they are. Replace the offending component. should only be 2 hoses coming from and to your PS unit 1 is high pressure and the other is a return line. the Fluid all over the engine compartment is from the fan blowing the fluid,

my suggestion clean the area fill the PS unit up and have someone start the vehicle and watch where the fluid is coming from.

well your power steering pump could have went out, but crank it up take the lid off and look inside while someone turns the wheel and see if the fluid is moving around and then have them do it while its in park wile giving it some gas and check again to see if its moving if not its probably went bad

possible needs power steering fluid needed. or also a possible clog. hope it a quick fix.

Find the leak and repair it...It is a sealed system, if you are adding large amounts of power steering fluid, it is leaking out somewhere. Hoses, reservoir, steering box, power steering pump are places to check. You should only have to add minimal fluid to the system for the entire year.

The immediate squeal you hear is most probably the unit is out of fluid or has leaked onto the serpentine belt and causing it to slip.
Fix the leak and check your serpentine belt for wear.

If it's not a serpetine belt, max deflection of 3/4" on longest segment should be safe,  don't make alternator belt tight as a drum or you will burn out alternator bearings quickly.  If it has serpentine belt, the spring tensioner should keep the belt properly tensioned unless it's worn out.
It only needs to be tight enough to not slip, too loose will squeal and you will have to tighten,  to tight will kill alternator and you will spend $$.
