If you need instructions, do yourself a favor and have it repaired by a shop that works on Mazda's. You will want to replace the water pump and oil seals. its not a job for Backyard Bob.

hi from uk the 626 water pump is not driven by timing belt but by another drive belt so easy to change after removal of under wing cover to access /see pump b4 you remove drive belt would advise you to slacken off the water pump pully 1st while it is held by drive belt to prevent turning ? then with belt off /pully removed pump is more accessable hope this helps?

Its under the timing belt cover, driven by the timing belt. Replace the timing belt when you replace the pump. While its apart, replace the cam and crank oil seals, and check the bearing for the tensioner, it will need to be replaced also.

No,the 1996 Mazda 626 is not a interfearance engine, meaning that the valves will not hit the pistons if the belt breaks while underway but the engine will not run untill the belt is replaced.

The water pump is located at the front of the engine ( where the timing belt is) To replace it you will need to remove the timing belt covers and the belt. If you have not tackled this sort of problem before i would recommend you purchase a workshop manual ( Haynes or similar) and that will show you the correct way to do it. Best of luck.

usually a good time to change it is at about 100,000 miles. change it before it becomes a must or not ride(type of thing). if your water pump is run by your timing belt, then yes you should change the water pump when you do the timing belt. the tension from the new belt will sooner than later kill the bearing in the old water pump and it will cost you twice to fix it versus the one time fix. when you go in to the shop there should be no additional cost to replace the timing belt because it has to come off to replace the water pump.
