Formally, the number 1 cylinder is the cylinder that is "top-dead center to fire" when the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears are aligned.

To make it easier, the cylinder numbers are often stamped into the intake manifold, usually right next to the intake port, and also in a picture of all cylinders someplace on the manifold. It is also often on the EPA emissions sticker.

In an inline engine, number one is usually in the front, nearest the water pump.

4 or 6 cylinder straight blocks No. 1 is always the first one next to the pulleys. On a V block, if you look down at the top of the engine, No. 1 will be slightly forward. It can be on either side of the motor, but most likely on the drivers side.

Sounds like the timing is off. When looking at the distributor cap right next to it should be 2 wires with a plug at the end of it. Unplug it and start the car then check your timing . Make sure you mark the crank 10 degrees BTDC. You can bump it to 14 degrees BTDC if you like to gain 10 extra hp. After timing is set turn off car plug spout back in to the 2 wire outlet.(You have to unplug the 2wires in order to time a 5.0 the 2 wires control vaccum)

SOURCE: i have a 92 ranger

it will run on a either spray without a spark but not not petrol ,now without my greasy hands under the bonnet i would ask you as you obviously can do a bit yourself to check for a spark before you go any further ,pull the centre lead out of the distributor cap and then crank engine and see if you get a spark ,the nice fat juicy blue one ,if a weak yellow spark then a least you know what your up against either a weak coil or a crank sensor or what i would go for and thats the ignition module first. Now if it was the mass iair flow then i would expect it to run but not rev up ,if it was the flow meter valve on the throttle body then i would have expected it to run with petrol sprayed into intake like you have done but to only run on either leads me to suspect the strength of the spark .Anyway dinner is served and dearly beloved is shouting *'¡?? so i had better go ,best of british with it

I accidently took the distributor out on a 1992 4 cylinder izzuzu pickup, while doing some mechanic work. How do I put it back on without having to time the whole motor again?

The best way is to turn engine over to #1 cylinder, turn by damper pulley. Remove #1 spark plug first and put a straw or similar device in plug hole on top of piston so you can tell when its at tdc. Just before #1 piston goes down thats tdc. To replace distributor put it back in with rotor button pointing to #1 wire in cap, tighten, replace the plug then start vehicle When vehicle starts adjust distributor by turning it either way. How to insall distributer on 1966 ford mustang

Okay, you have to set the number 1 cylinder at TDC of its
compression stroke, and then drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower. This should start the car, then you could set the timing to spec with a timing light.

There are two TDC's of a cylinder- the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. To find the compression stroke, take out the #1 cylinder spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Now either turn the engine over by hand (with a socket on the crankshaft pulley-turn clockwise), OR have a helper bump the starter over in as short bursts as possible. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger- stop turning- the piston in #1 is rising on its compression stroke. Now check the timing pointer or scale by the crank pulley. Turn the engine slowly on over until the notch or mark on the crank pulley is right on the zero degrees mark on the scale. This is TDC of compression stroke-the piston is at top of travel in the cylinder. Put the distributor in so the rotor will be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire.

I am having problemsseting the distributor on a 1996 chevy 305. this is a new motor . do i set the pointer at # 6 or # 1

The distributor rotor must point to the post on the cap of the cylinder that is firing. In your case, if #6 is at TDC of the compression stroke, than the pointer must point to the distributor cap post of the #6 cylinder wire. But I must tell you that if you have TDC on #1, and rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, #1 will be at TDC again...

94 yota pickup V6. Timing belt failed, replaced it, now it's running rough and lacks power. Ideas?

The engine is a free running type so bent valves should not be the problem. Recheck the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. If you are one timing belt tooth off, the engine could run but run rough. With the number 1 cylinder piston at top dead center, the camshaft marks should be lined up with their "TDC" marks and the crankshaft mark should be at 0 deg.

If the distributor was removed during the belt replacement, make sure it is in time with the crankshaft timing mark. When the No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center, the crankshaft timing mark should be on 0 deg. and the distributor rotor should be pointing to the number 1 terminal on the distributor cap at the same time.

I can't find the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. it's a 2000 ford mustang 3.8ltr. automatic. there is no tdc mark. or scribedline.the only thing stamped on the balancer is a number and code. the...

If the balancer does not show the mark, bring the number one piston to TDC. Do this by pulling the #1 plug out; (may take two people) use a screwdriver or something of the sort and insert it partially into the #1 plug hole. Manually crank the engine over until you feel the piston hit the screwdriver and let it push the screwdriver out. If the screwdriver goes back in, just back it up a little. Put the plug back in, pull the distributor cap off (if distributor is installed) and see that the rotor is set to the #1 plug on the cap. If so, you should be able to start the car. Use the distrubutor to fine tune the timing. Idle should be between 800-1000 (about 900-950 roughly).

TIMMING

You have to check the valve's on #1 cylinder. When your pointer is lined up with 0 on the crank the piston is at TDC. But you need to turn it past tand watch to see which valve opens. If the exhaust valve sarts to open then you have it timed right. If it doesn't open turn the engine a full rotation back to 0 and check it again. The exhaust should start to open this time. That is where your distributor rotor button should line up at #1 plug. Hope this helps.

1989 MUSTANG GT 5.0 HAS SPARK,FUEL PRESSURE,CRANKS OVER BUT WILL NOT START,INSTALLED NEW DISTRIBUTOR AFTER GEAR ON OLD ONE WAS WORN OUT.

Check that with the front left (as you face it) piston is at TDC, the distributor's rotor (under the cap) points to the #1 spark plug tower location.

Also, check that all wire connections are secure and not shorted/intermittent, etc.

Lastly, check that wires are installed in the correct firing order.

I agree, jumped timing. Check to make sure the dist is tight. Than check for tdc on the #1 cylinder. When the #1 cyl is TDC the rotor should be pointing to that wire on the cap. Take the cap off while checking. Also is easier to turn motor by hand without plugs in motor.
