If it is a carb engine check the carb setup, check if the carb is clean.

If it is a carb engine check the carb setup, adjust idle and mixture settings, check if the idle is not too low. see an example here: CARBURETOR SET UP

If it is an electronic injection, then it can be dirt injectors, or a faulty control module, scan the ecm and see if you find any fault.

Check also air intake, air filter and fuel filter.

2003 F250 Super Duty diesel 6.0 needs multiple tries to start.

Are you getting white smoke or no smoke from the exhaust after failed start attempts?
When the FICM was replaced, did Ford check the glow plugs and injectors for proper operation?
Are you using an engine oil heating element or is the engine dead cold when this happens?
How long does the engine run the first and second start attempts before it stalls and dies?

The catalytic converter may be coming apart inside - the loose catalyst could be moving around and intermittently blocking the exhaust. A malfunctioning Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve could also be part of the problem. Sometimes carbon buildup in the exhaust manifold can cause trouble, but usually this causes stalling upon acceleration after coasting down a hill.
Put your hand near the exhaust pipe outlet while a helper starts the engine. If the exhaust flow is highly variable in volume (not just simply on-off as it would be for a cylinder misfire), you definitely need to check for exhaust blockage.
Fuel delivery problems (e. g. pressure bleed-down followed by fuel vaporization in the line) can cause hot start problems, but that doesn't account for the odd noise under the vehicle.

4.0 liter motor will not idle below 24500 rpm. 1994 aerostar, 4 liter motor, auto

i hope that the 24,500 RPM is a miss-print and you mean 2450 RPM.

get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray around the intake manifold with the engine running if there is a vacuum leak causing the idle problem when you spray the cleaner around the leak the idle will change, if you find no leaks replace the idle control valve or motor witch ever you want to call it.

let me know if there is any thing else you need.

Idle goes steadily down when stopped for awhile

check to see if that vehicle has an idle air control module, if it does replace it,

ISSUE: After a 1-4 hour engine soak time, long crank times and/or long crank to start followed by a stall may occur on some vehicles. No further stalling or rough idle will occur after the engine is running. The long crank and/or stall may be due to the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve sticking.
ACTION: Replace the IAC Valve with a revised IAC Valve if no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Perform normal diagnostics and correct any DTCs as required by referring to the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
  2. If no codes are present, replace the IAC Valve by referring to the appropriate model/year Service Manual, Section 03-14. Refer to the following Idle Air Control Valve Application Chart for proper IAC usage.

Power steering

quite often ford steering pumps make noise, but if it is hard to steer, the fluid is probably low. First check underneath to see if there is a puddle, if there is then find and fix the leak. next, start it and get it to normal op. temp., while idling, pull the pump plug/ dipstick, check the level, add fluid if necessary. Steer the wheels back and forth a time or two, then check the level again. Double check underneath, visually inspect for puddles/wet spots. does the problem change after these steps? Theres not likely any water in it, therefore freezing isn't likely. Hope this helps.

Sputtering-missing-vibrating-knocking-backfire-bucking

I'm having the same problem with my 90 2.3L Ranger. I replaced the EGR Valve back in August and the truck ran fine (but the gas mileage was bad) until late December . I knew it needed an O2 Sensor back in August but didn't replace it until last Saturday along with the Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs and Wires. The truck ran fine for a couple minutes then started running like a VW bug! My code reader is now throwing out an EGR failure code, so I guess i'll take the 4 month EGR back and get a new one, and see what that does!_549.jpg
