I got a new battery, tested the starter (good) and the wire has "spark", and got a new ignition switch; nothing! no mechanical sound from the starter, or anything else for that matter. However, my temp. gauge jumps, pinned to the hot when i turn the key. Also a few weeks ago my speedometer stopped reading properyly; the rest of the gauges are correct.
There are two ignition switches. The mechanical switch in the steering column (Key cylinder), and the electronic switch. Also, the neutral safety switch under the steering column at the brake pedal can cause this problem. Since some of your Gages have gone haywire there is a possibility of a PCM/ECM (power/ Engine econtrol module) failure or bad connection. I would also suggest you check, and if necessary, replace the engine ground strap.
Check for power to the starter with the key in the start position.
SOURCE: I have a 2004 Chevy
inherited the 2004 chevy cav. in JUne. ABS Trac and other lights on and off. finally drove it across the US and the shifting started to go and this would include the speedometer would just crash and do nothing.. After numerous trips to the dealer and others to test it. finally a dealer found the problem and replace d the computer (said under warranty, we don't have a warrantly but it must be a factory fix up one), anyway, have yet to pick it up but this had been ongoing for months and hope that you all dont end up like us. HInt, ours would only do it once it got hot. live in 100+ temps but would run car alot to get it to show there is a problem when we got tested last time. Maybe it is all tied in. only thing I an think of that would mess up your speedometer. good luck.

Hello, Last year General Motors lost a lawsuit about the instrument panels in 2002 to 2005 trucks. The following website contains all the information about this lawsuit settlement.

This impacts the entire gauge cluster in your vehicle.
I have the same year and model as yours and my speedo is never accurate and the tach always read 6000.
The issue is the metal bearings that the gauge meter movements use. The bearings are getting dry which impedes the meter movement.
sounds like your missing a ground somewhere.
