Removing sump in car

To replace sump gasket in Rover SD1 sedan do i have to remove motor as cross member looks like is in the road ??

  • Anonymous Dec 30, 2011

Spoke to a rover guy, reckons you have to remove the cross member to remove sump, so need a brace across strut towers to support motor so you can leave motor in car . Cross brace has engine mounts attached to it ! Think I might leave this one for the mechanic.

You will have to jack up the engine.
I don't think you have to remove the starter

SOURCE: front crankshaft seal, 1989 hilux

Hello,

Yes, it's possible to change the seal after removing the balancer.
If the balancer shows signs of scratching, wear at the place of the seal, change that part too!

To remove the old seal, drill 2 small opposite holes in the seal flange ( there is metal in it ).
Screw 2 (parker) screws in the holes, so you can pull the seal out gently.
Grease the new seals' inner race, and put some sealant paste to the external race.
Push it back in place with a wooden piece ( drill a hole in the center for the crankshaft end )
Grease the outher race of the balancer. This will help the seal come gently into place.

Good luck!

SOURCE: oil pan removal?

Im not sure if you are talking about the motor pan or the tranny pan. But I have lifted the motor and tranny together on a vehicle to change the motor pan and mounts before. I remember having to loosen the fan shroud. Undo linkage on the tranny and make sure the shifter boots were loose. The key for me was going real slow with the crane and having extra eyes around. It was a pain but it worked out.

How to remove oil pan on 2008 ford f250 4x4 with 5.4l

You must disconnect everything and raise up the motor and put in wood blocks to keep it steady on the motor mounts the sump must be able to clear cross member and axle you will most likely have to unbolt it then take out the pick up tube that goes into the sump then it should come out installation is the reverse of removal

How do you replac a sump gasket on a i4500 rover motor mower

if it is a horizontal shaft it is a matter of splitting the crakcase from the cylinder body or removing the sump . If it is a vertical shaft the engine will have to be removed and the crankcase separated completely
If you have no experience and the correct tools then best give the job to a mower shop.

How long does it take to change a front stabalizer bar in a 2002 oldsmobile intrigue

The stabiliser bar should be in front of the front cross member as it has to move up and if the sump is in the road then it would hit the sump.. Depending on the difficulty in removing nuts and bolts I would say that an hour labour will be sufficient to do the job.

1994 gmc sierra 1500 pickup 4.3 L. v6...I am dropping trans pan to replace filter and gasket and add fresh trans fluid....the rear pan bolts are obstructed by a cross member and trans mount....I can see...

What you do is loosen or remove the cross member first

Then you decide,if using a small air driven cut off wheel to
remove some metal from cross member, will help remove
the trans pan in the future.

How to replace the oil pan gasket?

Drain oil, remove oil pan bolts, drop pan, scrape remnants of old gasket off, attach new gasket to pain using silicone gasket sealer (Permatex) and reinstall & refill w/oil. Some applications require loosening motor mounts and raising engine a couple of inches to clear cross members.

I can't get the timing cover off 2002 discovery.do you have to remove the oil pan? the passenger side is loose but tha driver side seems to have a bolt half way down coming from inside

Yes, RAVE mentions removing both the cylinder head gasket, and the sump gasket in order to change the chain. Also specifies removing the crankshaft pulley. Looks like a full on job!
