Sound like you may have cracks in the ductwork between your mass airflow sensor and the throttle body. Dismantle everything from the air filter to the throttle body and inspect it for cracks.
What is likely happening is that once the car warms up and goes 'closed loop' so the computer can control the fuel injection system, the car is able to compensate for the leaks so it runs a little better.

1985 318I bmw idle is high what do I need to do
A high idle could be due to many things but a major cause is a vacuum leak causing too much air to enter the fuel system which in turn causes the computer to overcompensate with fuel. Take it to an auto parts chain store where they will do a diagnostic scan for free and see if any error codes are present.

Have you removed the instrument cluster to check/replace the batteries on the Service Indicator (SI) board? These batteries go dead eventually and require replacement. BatteriesPlus carry the right type and will solder new connections for you. Replacement on the board itself requires soldering skills and equipment. This is something BatteriesPlus will also do, for a fee.

Coolant hoses have a small clip on their upper side on most BMWs, you can pry this little metal clip up with a flathead screwdriver and the hose should slide off with little resistance.
MY BMW 318I 88/89 MODEL
Hi Bruce
Take the vehicle for a scan and I'm fairly sure the fault will be recorded as a defective temperature sensor. Once that is replaced I think the problem will be solved. What happens is the sensor signals the injection system to allow more fuel for starting when cold and at the moment it can't know if the engine is hot or cold, so it injects for an engine at operating temp. (When cold the engine needs more fuel to be able to start)

A couple of possibilities - first I'd check/replace fuel filter. Then clean MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor and if those don't cure issue then it's TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) replacement time. Check w/BavAuto or Pelican Parts online - both good sources for info & parts
