I had this with my first unit and tried endless things without success. I have just had my 3rd replacement unit which crashed after trying to install a HD from an prevoius unit, and this gave me exactly the same condition as you are experiancing and i had with my first DOA unit. Can't power off or access via browser, and won't reboot using rear reset button. The fault lies with the HD's and all you can do is return the unit or HDs and i'm afraid you've lost your data, unless you pay WD data recovery agents :-( Not a soultion sorry

This is a problem with the HD's, which if you check via the browser, then advanced/storage will show the drives as good but unassigned. Only course of action is to try and totally reboot the unit to default which will lose all your data:-( but If this fails you will need a RMA from WD.

Make sure that your anti-virus is not performing a scheduled exam during those times.

Your system will slow down because your anti-virus might be performing a scan during those times.

What OS are you using? On Win 8/8.1/8.1 update My WD my book will blink several times and take as long as 30 seconds to display all the files.

THIS WORKS....Here try this...unplug everything including the power cable...press and hold the button on the unit for 10 seconds. after that hook the unit back in the power cord first..and it should work...files and everythin are there...I got this from tech support and it worked for me

It seems that your WD hard drive is corrupted soyou are unable to access the stored files. But there is no need to worry sinceit is very easy to recover data from corrupted WD partition by using Western digital partition recoverysoftware. Couple of days ago, even I was stuck under similar problem I triedthis software which really helped me to retrieve all my lost data.

you will need to let the computer that the musice has been copyed to get online and update the media player this will bring up all the song/album isuess hope this helps

Try reformating the drive with FAT32 file system (this is the default facotry mode).

avi is a container format, u can try some other codec

I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM! or at least this works for my my book 1tb external hard drive. when i initially connect it i get the 'new device detected' pop up thing, but then it doesn't show on my computer. However, I have found that keeping the device pllugged into the computer but removing then replacing the power source from the device causes it to show up. That's all I did, unplug the power cord on the back and replace it. The computer says 'new hardware detected' and 'found my book mass storage device,' then it appears on my my computer tab. Hope this works with you as well!
