Need the large o-ring where the pump housing bolts together on a Dyn 11 - N1 - 1 1/2 pump

if no cracks in housing then seal /gasket failure

sounds like you are missing the o-ring or clip that hold them together

Your Cabrio has one of several 2.0L Volkswagen engines - determine your engine type from the
8th digit of your VIN, which will be either an "A", or "C",both are 2.0L engines.

Volkswagen 2.0L engines offered in 2001:
(a) 2.0L (Aba) Engine
(b) 2.0L (Aeg/Avh/Azg/Bdc/Bev/Bgd) Engine

For completeness, I've included the water pump maintenance manual entries for all (3) 2.0L VW
engines offered in 2001. Note that the instructions below include (3) illustrations, which are
reproduced faithfully from the manual, but the last (2) illustrations are identical, since the last two
engines in the list above are virtually identical.

Volkswagen 2001 engines - water pump replacement

2.0L (Aba) Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Remove or disconnect:

1. Coolant

2. Thermostat housing from under the water pump housing.


Loosen but don't remove the bolts holding the pulley to the water pump.

Remove or disconnect:

Timing belt cover.

Alternator and/or steering pump as required to remove the water pump drive belt.

Water pump pulley. On some vehicles, the crankshaft pulley must also be removed by removing the bolts holding the pulley to the timing belt sprocket.

Water pump from its housing.


To install:


Be sure to clean the housing before installing the new gasket. Install the pump into the housing. Pump-to-housing bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

Install the water pump drive pulley. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Install crankshaft drive pulley. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Adjust drive belt tension and install the thermostat and housing. Bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

3. Adjust drive belt tension and install the thermostat and housing. Bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).



2.0L (Aeg/Avh/Azg/Bdc/Bev/Bgd) Engine


1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

2. Remove or disconnect:

Negative battery cable.

Coolant.

Accessory drive belt and tensioner.

Upper and center timing belt covers.



3. Position the engine so that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC.
WARNING
Cover the timing belt to protect it from being contaminated with coolant.


4. Loosen the timing belt tension and slide the belt off the water pump sprocket.

5. Remove or disconnect:

Timing belt guard (2) mounting bolt (1), if equipped.

Water pump mounting bolts (5), then the water pump (4).

O-ring (3) and clean the seating area.


To install:

1. Install or connect:

O-ring, moistened with coolant.

Water pump so that the plug in the housing faces downward. Mounting bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

Timing belt guard, if equipped. Mounting bolt: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Timing belt.

Upper and center timing belt covers.

Accessory drive belt tensioner. Mounting bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

Accessory drive belt.

Coolant.

Negative battery cable.



2. Check and clear any DTCs, then match the ECM to the TCM.


2.0L (Aeg/Avh/Azg/Bdf) Engine


1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

2. Remove or disconnect:
1. Negative battery cable.

2. Coolant.

3. Accessory drive belt and tensioner.

4. Upper and center timing belt covers.


3. Position the engine so that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC.

WARNING
Cover the timing belt to protect it from being contaminated with coolant.

Loosen the timing belt tension and slide the belt off the water pump sprocket.

Remove or disconnect:

1. Timing belt guard (2) mounting bolt (1).

There are none; the large diameter plastic ring catches on the motor adapter plate and secures the motor assembly into the pump housing. You may still have the yellow locking tab in the ring as well. If so, one end of it will lift out of a hole; do so. Spin the tab out of the way then use a blunted paint scrapper, chisel or block of wood and a hammer to tap the ring loose in a standard CCW direction. Once the ring spins free you will need to work the pump end loose. They often stick in the housing so rock it back and forth to eventually break it free.

the o ring usually would not fit if it were the wrong size. What seals is a ceramic seal, did you change that? If run without water, the ceramic seal will be damaged....

4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engines

1. Remove the air inlet duct.
   
2. Drain the cooling system.
   
3. Remove the radiator outlet hose.
   
4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
   
5. Remove the thermostat from the water pump housing.
   

The O-ring seal is integral to the thermostat housing

Thermostat housing-4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L engines

To install:

1. Install the thermostat to the water pump housing making sure the spring side is inserted into the engine.
   
2. Install the bolts.
   
   • Tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
3. Install the radiator outlet hose.
   
4. Fill the cooling system.
   
5. Install the air inlet duct.
   
6. Test the system for leaks.

2.5L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
2. Place a large drain pan under the radiator drain plug. Drain and properly
   contain the engine coolant.
   NOTE: This procedure requires removing the engine timing belt
   and the auto tensioner. To help assure proper alignment at assembly, it may be
   helpful to set the engine at TDC on No. 1 compression stroke. This should align
   all timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and both camshaft sprockets.
   
   
   
3. Remove the accessory drive belts and crankshaft damper.
   
4. Remove the right engine mount. This requires safely supporting the engine
   with a floor jack and wood block so the mount can be removed.
   
5. Remove the timing belt covers.
   
6. Remove the timing belt and tensioner.

7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
   
8. Separate the water pump from the water inlet pipe and remove the pump.
   To install:
   
   
9. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces. Inspect the pump for damage or
   cracks, signs of coolant leakage at the vent, and excessive looseness or rough
   turning bearings. Any problems require a new pump.
   
10. Install a new O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Wet the O-ring with water to
    make installation easier. DO NOT use oil or grease on the O-ring.
    
11. Install a new gasket on the water pump and fit the pump inlet opening over
    the water pipe. Press the assembly together to force the pipe into the water
    pump.
    
12. Install the water pump-to-engine bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    
13. Install the timing belt and timing belt tensioner. Set the timing belt
    tension.
    
14. Install the timing belt covers. Install the right engine mount. Remove the
    floor jack and engine block from underneath the engine.
    
15. Install the crankshaft damper.
    
16. Install the accessory drive belts and set to the proper tension.
    
17. Connect the negative battery cable.
    
18. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
    
19. Start the engine and verify proper operation, with no leaks.

No it doesnt. The other end of that pipe is the thermostat housing, it has several bolts holding it to the engine, once removed the pipe will slide out, where you will find a large o-ring where it enters the waterpump. Once you replace the o-ring apply some grease to get it to slide back into the water pump housing without damaging the o-ring.

1) Drain the radiator. 2) Loosen the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley. You will remove the pulley and install it on the new pump. Just loosen the bolts 1/4" turn with the belt still on, this will prevent the pulley from turning. 3) Remove serpentine belt. 4) Remove 4 bolts and the pulley and set aside. 5) Remove two power steering pump bolts (15mm). You must do this because one of the bolts for the water pump is behind the PS pulley, and you can�t remove it without moving the PS pump out of the way. The bolts on the PS pump are in the 12 o�clock and 6 o�clock position. There is a large access hole in the PS pump pulley. Just line it up, slip in a long socket and remove them. Let the PS pump rest on the oil filter housing. 6) Remove water pump. There are 4 large bolts (15mm) and 4 small bolts (3/8") on the water pump. After the bolts are all out, I placed a length of pipe on the water pump and gave it a couple taps with a hammer and it popped right off. 7) Remove old gasket. The tool of choice IMO is a razor blade like you�d use to remove a windshield inspection sticker. Be careful not to score the mating surface. Remove old gasket and dry off surface. 8) Seat the new gasket and water pump in place, install all the bolts. 9) Reinstall the PS pump and torque bolts. 10) Install pulley on water pump and torque. 11) Install serpentine belt. 12) Re-torque bolts on water pump pulley if needed
