This happens when the number of rings to answer of the provider voicemail is less than the number of rings to answer that the answer machine is set for. For example: if your provider voicemail rings to answer is set for 3 rings and the answer machine is set for 4 rings then the voicemail answers before the 4th ring, therefore the answer machine will never get a message. I would call the service provider's customer service number and request they increase the rings to answer above the number of rings to answer that the answer machine is set for. If you don't want voicemail to answer any calls(when your line is busy or when the answer machine is turned off) ask your service provider to disable voicemail.

Why won't the answering machine, when set to 'answer on' not record a message?.It goes to voice mail. Is my machine defective?

Maybe the answering machine is set to pick up at say"5 rings" and the voice mail is set to pickup at "4 rings" . Change the voicemail setting to a higher setting than the answering machine. That may be the problem.

Unable to leave voice mail, says good-bye

I don't think the voice mail is going bad.

On my 4424D+, I can turn off voice mail.
I use this feature when I'm gone for an extended period of time so I don't come back to 100 VMs.

Dial into your voice mail.
Choose the prompt for Call Answer Mode. (Option 8 on my phone.)
Then choose the prompt for Record Mode. (Option 1 for me.) This allows callers to record voice mails on your line.

Voice mail recording for my new panasonic digital phone

For voice mail service subscribers
If you subscribe to a flat-rate service
package that includes Caller ID, call
waiting, voice mail, and unlimited
local/regional/long distance calls, please
note the following:
L To use the voice mail service provided
by your service provider/telephone
company rather than the unit's
answering system, turn off the
answering system (page 30).
L To use this unit's answering system
rather than the voice mail service
provided by your service provider/
telephone company, please contact
your service provider/telephone
company to deactivate your voice mail
service.
If your service provider/telephone
company cannot do this:
- Set this unit's "Ring count"
setting so that this unit's answering
system answers calls before the
voice mail service of your service
provider/telephone company does.
It is necessary to check the number
of rings required to activate the
voice mail service provided by your
service provider/telephone
company before changing this
setting.
- Change the number of rings of the
voice mail service so that the
answering system can answer the
call first. To do so, contact your
service provider/telephone
company.

Checking voice mail remotely

This may be a little late, you are probably home already, but here it is anyhow:

Remote Operation
You can check, play, or delete messages, even record a new greeting message from a remote
location (when you are away from home, or from another room using a handset).
Additionally, you can turn On or Off your answering system remotely.
Remote access away from home
You can operate your answering system from a remote location using any
touch-tone telephone.
1) Call your telephone number and wait for the system to answer. If the answering system is
off, it will answer after about 10 rings and sounds a series of beeps.
2) During the greeting message (or a series of beeps when the answering system is off),
press 0 and enter your PIN code within 2 seconds (see "Setting a PIN Code" on page 25
or 54).
3) The answering system announces the current time and the number of messages stored in
memory. You hear "To play incoming messages, press zero-two. For help, press one-zero".
You will hear a beep.
4) Enter a command within 15 seconds, each command there after must be entered within 2
seconds. You may select a command from the following chart:
Command Function Command Function

0 then 1 Repeat a Message* 0 then 6 Answering System On
0 then 2 Playing incoming Messages 0 then 7 Memo Record/Stop**
0 then 3 Skipping a Message 0 then 8 Greeting Message Record/Stop**
0 then 4 Deleting a Message 0 then 9 Answer System Off
0 then 5 Stop Operation 1 then 0 Help Guidance
* For Repeat a Message function, press 0 then 1 within about four seconds to repeat
the previous message, or press 0 then 1 after about four seconds to repeat the
current message.
** For Memo Record and Greeting Message Record function, the first time you enter the
corresponding command, it starts the Recording function. If you want to stop the
recording, press 0 then 7 or 8.

5) After the command has finished, you hear intermittent beeps indicating that the system
is in the command waiting mode. You may enter another command at this time from the
chart above.
6) When you are finished, hang up to exit the system. The answering system automatically
returns to standby.

Going to voicemail

The phone you have can go on several different Norstar phone systems and you can have several different types of voice mail. Your voice mail (and possibly the phone system) needs to have programming changes, not the telephone. Your first step is to determine which Nortel phone system you have and also what model voice mail. You will need manuals for the phone system and voice mail. Hopefully you already have a programming or administration manual for the voice mail. Someone should have gotten this information when the system was first installed but that could have been many years ago.

What happens when you are waiting for that time? Do you hear absolutely nothing? Instead of being sent directly to your voice mail box, it may be sending callers to a voice mail branch where you would normally have a recording "press 1 for this, 2 for that" If there is no recording the system will wait for a response that the caller has no idea of and usually replay the message 3 times before defaulting to your mailbox (in this case a blank message). That is my best guess with the information I have from you so far.

Recording messages

You are asking about changing you voice mail and phone system settings. Your phone can work on several different Panasonic phone systems and you could have different voice mail systems as well.

The phone KX-T7633 has only a user guide that covers the basic features of the phone itself. You need a programming and installation manual for your phone system AND your voice mail. They are not the same part and have different manuals.

So, your first step is to find out the model number of your phone system and voice mail system.
