I think you have to shut your computer down completely and reboot. This means that you will lose any work you didn't save before going in standby mode.
If your PC has a 'reset' button (usually located near the power button), press it. Your machine should reboot. If it doesn't or if you don't have one, you can try pressing and holding the power button for about 5 seconds. This should shut down your computer completely. Press the power button once more and it should boot normally, though you might get a warning saying Windows didn't shut down properly. If you get the choice, just choose to boot Windows normally. If pressing and holding the power button doesn't work, try looking for a power switch on the back of your machine. It should be near the power cable. Flip the switch, wait a few seconds and flip it again, then boot your computer as usual. You might get the same message which I mentioned above.

Lock Your xp workstation

You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

I have got a new desktop tower but my usb keyboard won't work

TRY PUTTING THE USB KB IN ANOTHER SLOT, OR DOWNLOAD THE LATEST USB DRIVERS FOR *********** BOARD. ALSO CHECK YOUR USB CONNECTIONS ON YOUR MB FOR PROPER USB WIRING. ALSO LOOK IN DEVICE MANAGER TO SEE IF YOUR KB IS LISTED OR IF THERE IS A ? OR ! BESIDE KB ENTRY. IF YOU DO NOT SEE A LISTING, THEN YOUR KB IS NOT RECOGNIZED. IF YOU DO SEE ONE OF THESE MARKS THEN IT WILL EXPLAIN WHAT'S GOING ON. FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS, OR INSTALL YOUR USB DRIVERS FROM YOUR OS DISC.

Dell xps 400 keyboard and mouse not working, but the keyboard does work in when in service mode

If it works in service mode, then it is not a hardware problem. Boot Windows in "Safe Mode" using the F5 Key as it is Booting to Windows. That should make it re-discover the KB and Mouse. Make sure the KB and Mouse are pluged into the right ports. Mouse Green and KB Purple

Standby grayed out

OK, try going to Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, then Power Options (if the Control Panel layout is by categories). Go through the tabs until you find an Enable Hibernation check box, then check the box and click OK. This should make both Standby and Hibernate work (to use Hibernate, mouse over Standby while holding down either Shift key), if it does not then your system does not support the Hibernate function. Good luck to you!

Computer won't restart or shut off

Hi,
I had the same problem & I'm running the same OS. It happened after an update too. This is what I did. I made a new shortcut on my desktop for shutoff & restart, I just use this shortcut now & it works OK. If you want to try it this is how I did it...

XP Users:
1. Right click the Desktop and select New /Shortcut.
2. A screen will appear asking you for a Command Line. Here's what you put in that box: ( it's best if you copy & paste this into the box)

For Shutdown:
Shutdown -s -t 0

For Restart:
Shutdown -r -t 0

I don't know how to cut and paste my story on to my you tube web page

highlight the parts you wish to copy by selecting with left mouse button. Now hold the CTRL key + C key (thats the kb shortcut for copy)
Next, go to your webpage and use CTRL+P (kb shortcut for paste)
Sometimes the mouse function for cut and paste may not work with all sites..

Try this first and let me know..
