How do I disable the sound on my canon mx870 printer? It makes loud tones at start-up and at shut-down. My roommate is VERY bothered by it and I wouldn't mind the printer not announcing that I have turned it on or off.

tweety607-thanks for the info. I followed your directions and was able to put my printer into quiet mode; however, quiet mode had no effect on the turn-on or turn-off sound or volume.

Any ideas as to where the speaker is located? I could try physically blocking the sound there.

I was having the same problem. This is how to fix it. Go to the actual printer, press the setup button, scroll and click on device settings, scroll down and select device user settings, select volume settings, then you can turn off all of the sounds of the printer. I also put it on quiet mode just in case. Hope that helps!

Check in the control software "Cannon my printer" , or the printer settings

If running Windows Operating System you should find the printer settings this way
Click the start button
Control Panel
Printers
Right click on the name of the printer
Then click properties

Under the maintenance tab, you will find a setting for "quiet mode". That should help.

Where do you plug printer in and what does the cord look like

Hello JB..
manualslib.com may have a (free) pdf user manual for your model.
Meanwhile, using my Canon I/J at home as a guideline:
The back left of printer has 2 sockets - one for mains power, the other for data.
The mains power is a standard figure-of-eight type used in many appliances.
The data port is a D-shaped USB plug with a square hole in the center, with rectangular USB or USB2.0 at opposite end for PC.

I have a cannon pixma mx870 printer and I cannot receive faxes. I have unplugged all the phones in the house and checked the phone line that is hooked up to the printer.

Plug a phone into the little telephone extension lead that came with the machine to see if you get a dial tone. If you do then get someone to send you a fax and answer it with that phone. press the start button and it should go into receive. Make sure you are using the genuine canon lead too and its plugged into the "Line" socket and not the "Tel" one.

I have the canon mx870. I cannot get a dial tone. We've tested the the telephone jack and the wires with our telephone and theose work fine. How do I get a dial tone?

Check to make sure you've got the phone cord plugged into the correct port on the printer. There will be one with a picture of a telephone and another with a picture of a wall jack. Use the wall jack port and you should get a dialtone.

Scanner was working fine this morning. Now when I try to scan from my PC I get the Message "cannot communicat with scanner for these reasons: scanner is turned off, scanner is disconnected (it is...

Check the scanning unit by copying something on the platen. If this does not work, you have a defective scanning system. If it does work, check connections between the PC and the MX870.
Please let me know if this works. If not we can investigate further. Thanks.

MX870 Error 6C10

I installed a Canon MX870, Winxp SP2, I also have a stand alone Canon printer I550, and HP Scanjet 5370C, a wireless modem, all of these units are usb hookups. The computer takes almost 5 minutes to boot up when the canon MX870 is installed. It lockes up My Computer, Explorer.Exe. It finally comes in but why so long? I was afraid to buy an all-in-one unit and now maybe I wish I didn't. I removed the Canon MX870 and the computer works great. Can anyone help?

The status for the Canon MX870 goes to offline without me doing anything and then I have to turn it off and on to get it back online. Is there a way to keep it from going offline or turn the feature (???)...

Just check this. Go to the Printer and Faxes window in the Control Panel. (whether you are running XP, Vista or Windows 7...click Start, look for Control Panel then Printers and Faxes). Look for the printer icon for the Canon MX870. Right click the icon and you will get a little menu. If you see an option that reads: "Use Printer Online" select that. This is typically the problem. If you see an option that reads "Use Printer Offline"...don't do anything with this option and there is some other cause of your problem.

Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Printer works with Snow Leopard OS?

The MX870 is compatible with Mac OS X, all versions. I think the CD that comes with the unit will have the Mac Snow Leopard drivers on it, but if not you will be able to download them here.
