In the button left corner there should be a (FUNC) or (FUNCTION) key you need to press and hold while pressing the alternative key with the blue lettering.
Hope this helps-

How do you turn the sound up and down?

Hi Patricia,

What is the make/model of your laptop and what operating system are you using?
First is to look at your keyboard. All of your keys will have your main characters assigned to each key in bold, white letters, but some may have other characters or symbols in a different color.

This is a good example from a Dell keyboard where you have the volume keys above the numbers 7, 8, and 9 on the very top row (mute/volume down/volume up respectively). It's easy to see taht you simply hit these keys to mute, lower or raise your volume...very straight forward.

You also see that this keyboard has some smaller blue characters on the top row, set as the Function Keys. To access these you first hold the "Fn" key on the very bottom left of the keyboard (between Ctrl and the Windows key) and then press the top row to access the related function. I only point this out as some laptops have the Volume Up/Down set as such, where you will have to hold down and alternate key first (usually the same color) and then press or hold down that second key to activate it.

Good luck!

3414 gateway laptop backlight goes out

First look at the buttons on your keyboard. Look for keys that have a sun or light figure on them. It will not be the traditional white color, probably blue, or red, some off color. A particular laptop is a Dell Inspiron, and it has the symbols on the Up and Down arrows. It looks like a sun symbol. The symbols are blue in color, which means there has to be another key on the laptop that is also blue, that you will have to press in conjunction with these keys to perform the function. This is similar to a function key on a calculator. The default setting on your laptop is going to be power conserving. Meaning that when you unplug your laptop, the screen will dim to save power. You can change this by increasing the brightness. So in conclusion, in order to keep your laptop screen bright, you need to turn up the brightness when the laptop is unplugged. Make note that when you do this, the power consumption will increase.

How do I access the blue letters on keys?

Try holding the Alt or Ctrl key down, if not then look for a Function key or a blue key (not F1 -> F12)

Number key not working on laptop

If you are talking about the number symbols that are on keys U,I,O,P,J,K,L,M then notice what color the number symbols are on those keys. Normally they are blue or might have a square around them. That means you have to press and hold the key that is the same color or has the square around it on the left side of the keyboard. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN function key at the lower left hand portion of the keyboard, then hit the key for the number you want. Notice that the FN function key will be the same color as the numbers. If it's not the FN function key then it will be the key that has the square around it like the numbers has.

Cant figure out how to get it off the little blue symbols

Either the "blue" coloured 'FN' is _stuck_ in the "down" position, or you have accidentally activated the "Sticky Keys" Windows "accessibility" tool.

With "Sticky Keys", you press keys just _one_ at a time, e.g., CTRL then ALT then DELETE instead of pressing multiple keys (SHIFT and '8') at the same time.

Restart, in order to turn-off "Sticky Keys".

Or, "exercise" the 'FN' key, until it "unsticks" itself.

How do I use the third symbol on the key underneath the Esc key on a keyboard? I know how to use ¬ and ` but not the third (a vertical line)

Usually a third symbol on a key will require the holding of another key to apply that symbol as when holding the shift key to go upper case and what not. But the third the symbol is usually a different color and the key to press to access that symbol is the same color as the symbol is. Such as with many laptop keyboards the FN key (usually at the bottom left side of the keyboard) is a bluish color and pressing it is required to apply the blueish symbols on keys.
I hope this helps.
