My 96 jetta 2.0 is leaking oil from the top of the oil filter mounting area where the water hoses connect to it.it looks like it has two or three pieces bolted together might be plastic.can I take apart and fix or do I need a new/ used part

The oil is most likely leaking from the oil cooler seal. The oil cooler is the square aluminum piece that the oil filter screws onto. To replace the seal, remove the filter, remove both coolant hoses that attach to the cooler, remove the nut that secures the cooler to the block and slide the cooler off the tube. Replace the rubber o-ring seal which is available at the VW dealer. It's inexpensive. Replace everything in reverse order. Good luck

    I've replaced several of these and found it easier (and less messy) to leave the coolant hoses on and remove the threaded shaft for the oil filter instead. To remove the threaded shaft you will need a nut that matches the oil filter threaded shaft . Believe it or not, this thread is an SAE (American) size thread, not metric! (The shaft is 3/4" diameter, I don't recall the pitch but I got mine from Fastenal).
    First remove the oil filter. Then loosen the thin nut that sits between the oil cooler and the oil filter. Next, using the nut you bought, put it onto the end of the oil filter shaft and tighten this and the oil cooler nut against each other. Now use a socket on these nuts to loosen and rotate the shaft out. It should turn out easily after it's broken loose. When the shaft is removed you can push the oil cooler away from the mount and change the O-ring. (Some O-rings have locator tabs and some don't. Either will work but I prefer the one with tabs.) After the O-ring is replaced, put the shaft through the oil cooler and thread it into the housing until it bottoms. Don't tighten the shaft too hard into the housing, it's only aluminum. When the shaft is in and snug, loosen the two nuts you tightened against each other and remove the nut you bought. Push the oil cooler and seal up against the mount and tighten the oil cooler nut against the oil cooler. Replace your oil filter, start the engine and check for leaks.

Win i start the car and look under the hood, there is oil coming out of a box that is, on the side of the block. But above the oil filter ?? . How do i fix that, is it a gasket or what ??

That is the engine oil cooler. There is a 'O' ring between it and the oil filter mount. They harden and crack.

Ask your dealer for the large Oil Cooler 'O' Ring.

Remove oil filter. Remove exposed pipe nut holding oil cooler to housing. If nessacary, drain coolant so you can disconnect coolant hoses from cooler or catch coolant as hoses disconnected. Swing oil cooler away and remove old 'O' ring.

Place new 'O' ring with grease on oil cooler it to hold it in place and reassemble. Tighten oil filter pipe nut to around 18 ft lbs .

Refit oil filter. Refit coolant hoses and top of oil and coolant.
Run engine to check for leaks and allow to cool. Top of coolant to COLD level if required.

You will need hose clamp pliers and wrench for oil cooler pipe nut. Pliers can be obtained from most parts stores.

I have a 2002 VW Jetta TDI and am problems with turbo.

1.Disconect lower hose from intercooler and oil (from 0,1 liter or more) (sometimes 1-2 liters) comes out, you should not drive it.(car had probably loose power) Change the turbine, oil and oil filter. do not forget to disconect lower hose and let oil drain out. Otherwise when new turbine is instald, the air flow will **** this oil inside the engine and distroy it.
2.your car is not designed to run without turbine and will not work like normal disel.(SDI).

Need to know name of hose that is just below upper radiator hose it has 3 connections 1)to the thing that hold oil filter 2)over by water pump and 3)connects to hose on rightside of engine just above oil...

That is still a little hard to say, because there are heater hoses and crank case ventilation hoses in that area. But the base beneath the oil filter is a cooler that has water lines to it. That sounds like the best bet. But you don't need a name. Hoses don't really have names. What you need is a description to give to a parts person. And that is most easily done with a cell phone camera. But you can draw a sketch instead. And the parts person will give you a name for it if you really want one.

1998 vw jetta, oil leaking from housing unit above oil filter, what is that unit, and what am i looking at for cost to repair, it appears to just be a gasket which i would love to be able to do myself, but...

It's your oil cooler which needs an o-ring replaced. It's pretty simple if you have the right size deep soket to get to it. I don't have the size in mind but I'm sure it's bigger than a 19mm. It's the nut in the middle where your oil filter spins on. If it's on the flange (block area) you'll need a paper gasket and a long allen socket to remove the three allen bolts.

My 2002 VW Jetta leaks on the passenger side every time it rains. The water leak is worse when the car is parked and not being driven. I suspect it has something to do with the weather stripping.

i was a water leak specialist for vw and mainly the leaks are from around the rubber at the windshield as well as follow down through the antenna the 2 fuses under the drivers dash are 45.00 each 20 years ago im sure three more than that now ...use a garden hose and start low and after a few minutes raise it little by little until leak is found as well as a 2nd person in the vehicle with a light to look for the leak you may caulk or of that nature using tape to ensure a nice straight line on the windshield and not make a mess sometimes it even comes from the fenders and so look carefully and raise the hose upwards going slowly allowing the water to penetrate the area in which it finds its way in

Trying to find fuel filter location on 06 jetta 1.9 tdi

Should be mounted the same as a 2005. On the inner fender, above the right-hand wheel arch, in front of the windshield washer tank. Pull the retaining clip that secures the control valve to the top of the filter assembly. Pull up the control valve and its hoses, away from the filter. (1) To drain water out of filter: At the bottom of the fuel filter, loosen the drain plug, while holding a container underneath the filter to catch the diesel fuel and water. When you have drained the water, and diesel fuel is now draining -- stop! Twist the drain plug closed, pour a few ounces of fresh diesel fuel in the top of the filter. Use a new O-ring when reattaching the control valve to the filter top. When the vehicle is running, check for any leaks. (2) To replace the fuel filter: start where #1 above begins, disconnect the fuel control valve from the top of the filter; mark the other two fuel lines with tape and disconnect them (they may be attached with spring clamps that you will need to cut -- replace them with screw-type fasteners, see instructions below); remove the fasteners and take the filter and mounting bracket from the vehicle. Loosen the bracket and remove the filter. Fill a new filter with fresh diesel fuel (you don't want to try to turn the engine over to fill this filter -- you may burn up your starter) and install it in the bracket, then reattach the bracket to the vehicle. Attach the control valve with a new O-ring and secure the hoses with screw-type clamps. When the vehicle is running -- inspect for any leaks. Hope this helps -- these are instructions out of the 1998 - 2005 VW manual. Should be no different for the 2006.

Oil cooler seal

There are two items that can be leaking oil there. There is a gasket between the oiler cooler flange (the item attached to the engine), and the rubber gasket/seal that goes between the cooler and the flange. (the latter is the one that leaks most often as most oil change shops over tighten the oil filter).
I just replaced the gasket between the cooler and flange recently. I chose to do it quick and dirty: 1. remove oil filter 2. remove oil filter nipple (the portion you screw the filter onto) 2a. you'll need a deep well socket to get the bolt that holds the cooler tight (I believe 27mm)
2b. pull down the cooler, Grab the nipple with a pair of pliers between the flange and cooler and loosen/remove
3. remove old gasket/seal and clean surface 4. put new seal/gasket in place 5. re-seat the nipple back in. use the pliers method, just make sure you don't scar the threads where you NEED them( you don't need all of them). 6. put some gasket sealer (oil friendly) on the gasket and make sure its in place 7. tighten oil cooler onto flange with large nut and socket 8. replace oil filter and add oil as needed.
it is a tight working area, expect some scrapped knuckles, but it isn't too difficult.
