The error message "NTLDR is missing" means that the Windows boot loader (NT Loader, NTLDR) cannot be found. This often occurs when the computer tries to boot from a drive other than the one Windows is installed on, due to a change in the drive configuration or because you left a bootable disk in a removable drive. But it may also be because the NTLDR file has been corrupted or deleted.

When your computer starts, the BIOS attempts to find the primary hard drive's active partition to read the first sector for the MBR (Master Boot Record), it uses that info to load the rest of the OS. For Windows NT4/2k/XP the MBR is pointed to the NTLDR (New Technology Loader) and it takes it from there. If you get the "NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart" what's most likely going on is the BIOS either didn't look for the right drive, didn't find the right partition, it wasn't active, didn't find the MBR, or the MBR didn't list NTLDR in the right place, the location of NTLDR changed, or you are looking at a hardware failure situation

Solution
First, check the boot drives to make sure that the computer is not trying to boot from a different drive to the one that contains Windows.

  • Check that there are no CDs or DVDs in the CD/DVD drives.
  • Check that no removable drives are plugged in to the USB ports.
  • Check the boot order in the BIOS Setup to ensure that the computer boots from the drive containing Windows before any other bootable devices.
  • Check that the cables of the hard drive are plugged in properly and are not loosely connected.
If this does not resolve the problem, you will have to repair the NT boot loader.

Fix NTLDR The easiest way to fix the "NTLDR is missing" error is to use Spotmau PowerSuite. However, if your computer is using Windows XP and you have a Windows XP installation CD you may be able to boot from this and use the Recovery Console to fix NTLDR manually instead.

NTLDR is short for NT Loader, which is software that helps to start your computer's operating system. If your computer says the NTLDR is missing, then your computer is attempting to boot up from a non-bootable source, or a drive that does not have NTLDR. Examples of non-bootable drives include CD or DVD drives and flash drives. To clear this error, remove non-bootable drives and reboot your computer. Also check the boot order in your Basic Input Output System (BIOS) to make sure your computer is starting properly
Corrupted files, loose cables inside your computer and damaged hard drives also will prompt an "NTLDR Is Missing" error. If you continue to receive this error after multiple attempts to boot, then you may have one of these other problems and you will need to consult with a computer technician to troubleshoot t

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to boot

My friend has a toshiba satellite a120 and it has a error message saying nltdr is corrupt the system cannot boot any help?

If you have a windows CD, you can boot into the 'Recovery Console' - this is a command line type program on the CD that lets you perform Repairs on system files, and other things as well.

To enter Recovery Console in Windows XP, you will need to boot from the Windows XP CD.

1. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.

2. Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.

Hopefully you have seen or will see a blue screen loading many files across the bottom. it will also offer you to press a function key for specific boot options. ignore all this until you get to the Setup Window

When the Windows XP Professional/Home Setup screen appears, press R to enter the Recovery Console.

The Recovery Console is now loading but needs to know which Windows installation to access. Most users only have a single Windows XP installation so the choice is usually clear.

To the Which Windows installation would you like to log onto question, press 1 and then Enter.

The Recovery Console now needs to know the administrator password for this Windows XP installation.
To the Type the Administrator password request, enter the password and press Enter.
Note: If you do not have a password or Windows XP normally starts without asking for one, simply press Enter.

When you reach the command prompt, type the following two commands, pressing Enter after each one:

copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\

copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

In the command listed above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your Windows XP CD is currently in. While this is most often d, your system could assign a different letter. Also, c:\ represents the root folder of the partition that Windows XP is currently installed on. Again, this is most often the case but your system could be different.

If you're prompted to overwrite either of the two files, press Y.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that missing or corrupt versions of the NTLDR and/or Ntdetect.com files were your only issues, Windows XP should now start normally.
