Yes, my daughter found same thing. I think using parens is a workaround, and then there is a function buried in math>misc somewhere.Yes, my daughter found same thing. I think using parens is a workaround, and then there is a function buried in math>misc somewhere.

None of these solutions answer his question. When converting a fraction or any number with decimal places to Binary, the TI-89 gives "Error: Domain error." For example, entering .6875 [2ND][MATH][BASE][BIN] does not work. I haven't found a way to do it with built in functions. In order to do these types of conversions, I use the following method.
Convert: 0.6875 to Binary - left of decimal is a 0, so write down a 0, then a decimal point: (0.) - multiply .6875 x 2 = 1.375 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1) - drop the 1 and multiply .375 x 2 = .75 left of decimal is 0. write a 0: (0.10) - multiply .75 x 2 = 1.5 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.101)
- drop the 1, multiple .5 x 2 = 1. left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1011). - since there is no more fraction, the final answer is (0.1011). Hope this helps.
One can express percentages as fractions. Say you have 60% and you want to change this into a fraction. you can also express this as 60/100 because all percentages are are parts of 100. So to change a fraction into a percent you would just convert the fraction into a decimal by dividing (3/4 = .75). Then to get the percentage you just multiply the decimal by 100 to get the percent. (75x100=75%
The division sign acts like a fraction on the ti-83; to multiply two fractions you may want to wrap them both in parenthesis to get the order of operations correct. Vote early and often
Transforming 0.175 to fraction: = 175/1,000 Reduce to lowest term (divide by 5 both the numerator and the denominator): = 35/200 Reduce further by dividing both by 5: = 7/40 This is the lowest terms now that it can't be reduced further. The "Other" way round,
Bottom number into ONE and multiply it by the Top. EG: 3/4 == 1 divided by 4 = 0.25, now we multiply, .25 by the Top number or in this case 3, that equals 0.75. 1/4 =0.25 x 3 = .75. 3/4 is the same as 0.75.
Ther e is no dedicated key to do that but ther is a command ToFrac noted as ->Frac. To access it use [MATH[1:->Frac].
Two ways of using the command. 1. You want to reduce a fraction to its simplest expression 27/48 [MATH][1:->Frac] [ENTER] gives the reduced fraction 9/16
2 You do not want your results converted to decimal numbers
(27/48) [x] (5/7) [MATH][1:->Frac][ENTER] multiplies the two fractions and gives a fraction as a result. 45/112
3. Your result is in decimal form and you want to cast it into a fraction. The conversion will be exact only for certain numbers. Results kept in fraction forms are more accurate than those represented as decimals. Hope it answers your question.
Hello,
To convert fractions to decimals or decimals to fractions, you use the [S<->D] key. Each time you press the key the result is displayed in the other format.
Alternatively, If you multiply or divide two integer numbers put a decimal mark at the end of one of the numbers (any one). The result will be displayed in decimal format.
