I have a brother mfc-4400cn.. I have the same problem. The connectivity to the printer is fine. I can print over the network, but I can't scan a document. Whenever I go to my printer and select the SCAN button, it just errors and says check connection. My connection is good, i've changed my ip on the printer and can still print over the network just fine. My fax is also working. AAHHHH!!!

The solution to your problem is in your network. A 205 error is network related with a confusion in where the IP address is. Make sure that you have the right IP address for your brother printer. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT... make sure that YOU DO NOT HAVE a wired AND wireless connecion. This will cause confusion between the printer and PC. It will not know where to send the file. Lastly if you are printing with a gateway connected to a router this could also cause problems. ie comcast gateway connected to router. I currently have a comcast gateway connected to router with no problems. But i also have my gateway in DMZ plus mode(complete unrestricted access for router)

Hope this helps.

to the person who says don't buy brother, I happen to like brother printers. They have been the most stable out of all that we have owned at our office. If you have a cell phone and can not figure it out you get help. the answer can't be don't buy a cell phone.

I just change my desktop IP address from automatic to static/fixed IP address. Now it's working. Thanks for the "cause confusion" keywords.

If you're using Win7 or Vista, you're problem is very likely related to the Windows Firewall. Go to control panel -> windows firewall. Choose advanced settings. Check Inbound Rules for a rule called BrotherNetwork Scanner. The specific local port that needs to be open is UDP 54925. Under Advanced, check to make sure the profile you're running with is selected. In my case, the brother software had created the rule in the 'Public' profile, which didn't apply because I was using the 'Private' profile. Once I switched, everything worked great.

I like the Don't buy Brother idea, but check if it's a wired and wireless computer. The software doesn't like wireless....

Disable the wireless, reboot, reboot the Brother (hopefully you don't have to uninstall/reinstall), and test over hardwire.

Thats fixed it multiple times for me!

This is due to a stupid stupid setting within the Brother ControlCentre3 software that has its own setting for Email client and doesn't depend on the default setting in Windows. I experienced it after installing Thunderbird over Windows Mail . . . oh, how to fix it, you'll be wanting to know . . go to the Brother website www.brother-europe.com, create an account, then go to

Go to MY COMPUTER then to PRINTERS & FAXES and then under Other Places to SCANNERS & FAXES.

you will see the brother and right click on properties. check in the Network tab the IP address, it's probably wrong, it should be the same as the port in the properties for the printer configuration

My scanner/faxer won't scan for my mfc-490cw brother product. I always have to reset it and push 20 buttons so I don't remember how to do it. Can you help?

I have the same problem. It was working fine, then after not using it for a few weeks, all the sudden I couldn't scan. I'm hooked up wirelessly through my router. I can initiate a scan both from my PC and from the scanner itself, when initated from the scanner my PC responds and shows the progress bar, and the scanner actually scans. However for some reason no data is being sent back to the PC. And after a few minutes I get an error message saying that communication was lost (or something like that) error TW007. Yesterday I called into brother support and was on the phone for an hour and a half. they walked me through verifying connectivity, uninstalling and reinstalling the software and drivers, but to no avail. In the end we made no progress. I can print without a problem, and fax and photocopy. But for some reason it seems that the scanner is not transmitting the information back to the computer, even through the connection was established and the computer is waiting for the data.

I have a brother MFC 9440CN when I try to scan a document the error message comes up as not being connected to pc. The cable is definitly connected as the print option works fine. Can you help. Thank you.

Are you scanning from the PC, or are you scanning from the printer?

If the latter, the scanner is trying to send the document to a server software on the PC, which is probably not running; hence the "not connected" message.

Try acquiring a picture using Control Panel -> Scanners -> Acquire Image and see if it works. If it does, you must run (or reinstall) the Control Center software, and configure it as to where to store the Scan-to-File documents.

MFC 210c Unable to Print Use Troubleshouting and routine maintenance chapter in Users Manual

My color has not worked well in the past few months. Now I get the message Unable to Print, Use Troubleshooting and rountine maintenance chapter in user's manual. I've tried everything it told me. I've removed all ink cartridges and left them upright (they are ALL brand new) and cleaned all the ink ports. I've cleaned the machine several times. It's told me there's no ink cartrige, I've replaced them, turned the machine off and on, unlplugged, etc. Then go to print and I get the same message again and it won't print. The machine is almost 2 years old and has worked fine until about 6 months ago when the magenta stopped working all together. Now this. Any help? Thanks.

Wont work

Hi,
The issue you have posted does require little more information in order to isolate the issue to fix it. Information like have you installed the printer driver and connected the printer cable to the system in your system for the printer to communicate, are you getting any error messages when you are trying to scan or print, weather you have used the printer earlier and it was working fine till the recent past or it was just being used for sending faxes only and printing and scanning was not tried earlier, However let me provide you few steps that you cold try to fix the issue.
  1. Click on start point Control Panel and click on it.
  2. In the control panel window click on the icon labeled “System”
  3. Click on the Hardware option at the top and then click on Device manager.
  4. On the device manage page check if you have any devices under “Other Devices option with a YELLOW ! mark, if so right click on the device and left click on uninstall.
  5. Close all the windows and then insert the Driver disk for the Printer in the CD/DVD Disk Drive to install the drivers for the printer.
Note: At this point of Disconnect the printer cable if it is connected to the system tower, and do not connect the cable until the installation wizard prompts you to do so.

If you do not have the Printer driver disk handy then you can download and install the printer driver form the link below:
Brother MFC-3340CN Printer & Scanner Driver USB (Free Download)
http://www.driversdown.com/drivers/10429.shtml
Brother MFC 3240C Printer & Scanner Driver USB (Free Download)
http://printers.free-driver-download.com/Brother/25079/Brother-MFC-3240C-Printer-&-Scanner-Driver-USB-v.A-Windows-98-ME.html

  1. During the installation the wizard will prompt you to connect the printer USB cable to the system tower, so go ahead and connect it.
  2. Once the installation is finished restart the computer.
Should you require any further assistance regarding the
printer or even require assistance regarding any other
computer related issue in future please feel free to
contact me I will be more than glad to assist you.
