SOURCE: External hard drive will not turn on
Try a new enclosure, the case is just that. A hard drive cannot actually repaired. You cant open it and fix it. It's either reliable and functioning or not. Purchase a new enclosure and test the old drive. Data recovery should be the last option..most places charge a down payment on a car, and most of the time ( in my 12 years ) its the cheap enclosure.
Keep me posted.

i just had this issue. I took a small phillips screw driver out and removed the seagate hard drive from its enclosure. I brought the hard drive to a microcenter to verify if the hard was dead or something in the case. The hard drive was fine. I purchased a $15.00 inland 2.o to IDE/ SATA adapter from microcenter. This let me use my drive as I did before. All of my data that was on the drive is still there.

Yes there are. The first thing I'd say to you is you may want to involve a professional if the disc contains critical information because they would have experiance and tools you don't. If it's not that critical and you want to give it a shot you can run a file system check on the volume or run a program like spinrite www.spinrite.com

You can run a data recovery app on the drive and attempt to pull off any data still accessible. I recommend the GetDataBack Data Recovery apps from http://www.runtime.org . Get the one for the file system on your thumb drive and give it a try. These apps have recovered data from "dead" drives for me more times than I can count.
