Suspect the door latch has loosened enough to allow water spray to get into the latch cavity. Look for worn parts or loose adjustable components in the latch area (both door and case sides). Hope this helps!
Unscrew it anti-clockwise. It can be quite tough to turn. It will pour water all over the floor, so have towels ready. Another one of GE's brilliant ideas.
Hi, If the water is going out the drain hose, raise the drain hose so that its highest point is as high as the top of the washer. This should take care of the issue. If the water is coming out of the bottom of the machine, tip it back against the wall and look under the washer to see if a hose has broke or came loose.

Don't get rid of that machine. Those can last 30 years easily, and the stuff you get today cannot compare. You got a bad seal going from the basket to the outside tub. If left go, the motor eventually will short out. You will need to remove the adgitator first, by pulling up hard on it. Then grease the spline before you put it back. A 13mm metric socket (12 point) to take out the bolts holding down the basket. That rubber boot you will see in there is about 12" inches across at the bottom, and about 8" at the top, and looks like that funny hat Goober used to wear on Andy Griffith. The bottom band goes to the tub bottom, and the top goes up against the transmission. The clamps are reuseable, and the boot should be less than $30.00.
