If you would like to try to get a codec, you could try Windows Media Codec. Windows offers this package to the users that can be used as an alternative to automatically downloading Windows Media Codecs and for correct problems experienced with previous codecs. Also you could try some other free players that may include the format, such as Leawo Blu-ray Player and VLC.
An MKV file is a Matroska file, you can download the codec @ http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Matroska_Pack.htm
or
You can install the latest VLC Media Player, here which will play mkv format.
