I WAS TRYING TO SWITCH MY LAPTOP TO AN EXTERNAL MONITOR. I WAS PLAYING WITH THE SETTINGS (CHANGED VGA ADAPTER TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN). tHEN TURNED THE COMPUTER OFF AND WHEN i TURNED IT BACK ON, IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO START THROUGH THE TV BUT THEN WHEN THE DESKTOP WOULD NORMALLY APPEAR ON THE SCREEN, IT WAS BLUE-BLACK. I HEAR IT RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND SO IT IS WORKING. I TRIED TAKING OUT THE BATTERY BUT IT DIDN'T WORK.

If you told the laptop to Send the Video to the TV, that is what it is doing. I think you are saying it is showing up ON the TV now? right? like you told it to do so.

MOST all laptops, especially those made within the last few years, have the ability to connect an external display, such as a CRT monitor, flat panel display, or Projector, and have the display sent to that device instead of to the laptop display.

Connect the monitor, flat panel, or projector to the laptop's 15-pin video connection on the back of the computer as shown to the right. Once connected, your laptop may automatically switch to the new external display or you may be required to press a sequence of keys in order to switch from the laptop to the external display.

The key sequence can vary depending on laptop, however is often either: Fn + F3, F4, F5, F8, or F9. This means if you were fore example to press and hold Fn + F3 at the same time it'd switch between your laptop display to your external display. The function key will often be labeled as CRT/LCD and/or have a picture of a monitor on the key or close to the key. Unfortunately, the keys pressed to switch displays is dependent on the model and manufacturer of the laptop. If none of the above key sequences work, consult your laptop documentation or consult your laptop manufacturer.

Some laptops also have the ability to have the display on both the laptop and external display and/or one or the other at a single time. Laptops with this ability can switch between these modes by continuing to press the same function keys until in the mode the user wants.
the user guide and specks are here so THAT might help you.

  • Hi Ramona, try this; from the "Desktop," {ALT click} on the empty screen, when the short-cut menu open, select the "Personalize" icon. Next, click on the Display applet, from the categories. Once the "Display window open," you should see what appear to be a #1 and #2; these numbers represent the "Monitors." The primary monitor is the Laptop screen, you want to use the TV screen as a second or external monitor. In this case, view the "Button thats marked, [Identify Monitoers ,and click on it. the next thing you want to do is make sure the change takes affect, click the "Apply and OK buttons, and "Restart the Computer." Also double check all the connections, [Cables]. I will check back on this post to see if everything worked out OK, I'll know by the "Helpful Rating" that you will give. "Thanks for using Fix'Ya."

My inispiron 14z-5423 showsup black after I log-in. How may I correct/solve the prolem?

Two guesses.

1 The display output has been set to the SVGA external port on the back of the laptop. There should be a function key on the keyboard to switch the video output.

2 The device driver for the display got clobbered or changed to a non compatible device. Turn on the laptop, start pressing F8 again and again and again until the DOS boot screen is displayed. Select safe mode and login with your username. The display will be distorted but readable. Select control panel, device manager, and display adapter. Click on the adapter, select the driver tab, and update driver. Do some research and find the latest and greatest driver for the video chip.

If you have a VGA monitor, plug it into the VGA port and see if the video switches to the external monitor when you login.

Hope this helps,

Lap top does not function when I press the on button

Things to try or check. Remove battery pack and try turning it on with just the AC adapter supplying power. Try a different AC adapter. Try connecting a VGA monitor to the VGA port (on the side or back) of the laptop and press the Fn (function) key to enable/switch video to the external display.

My screen keep going white

To me this is a hardware problem.

Let's diagnose, and see Shunka_Reid.
Connect a VGA monitor to the laptop.

A) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.

http://support.gateway.com/s/notebook/2009/gateway/nv/NV78/NV78lv.shtml

Number 3 - External VGA display port

General example of VGA connector (port), and VGA cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

Scroll down a little for the VGA cable example.

You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.
General example of a CRT type of monitor,

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-crt-monitor.htm

B) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.

IF not;
There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor.
3) External VGA monitor ONLY.

Press, and hold the Fn key down, and at the SAME time tap once on the F4 key.
The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap on the F4 key once more.

Do you get a good display on the external VGA monitor?

Also, has the laptop ever been cleaned on the Inside, to your knowledge?

When I turn on my HP Pavilion 1x1000 It stays on ,but there is no image on the screen, and stays on please help.

A) Post THE Product Number on the bottom of the laptop. It's in the white Service Tag. P/N = Product Number.

B) On the left/bottom side of the LCD screen frame (Display Bezel), there is a switch. Looks like a small button.

This is the Internal Display Switch. (May not be in this exact position for your model. Look around on the Display Bezel, that surrounds the LCD screen)

When the laptop is closed, the switch turns off the display, (Image on screen), with the computer still on.
Tap it a couple of times lightly, with the eraser on the end of a number 2 pencil.

See if anything happens. That switch may be bad.

C) Laptop off, monitor off, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port on the laptop.

Example of a VGA cable, and VGA connector, (Port),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

You can use a CRT monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

C) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type of monitor allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.

IF not;
There are at least 3 display options,

1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Press, and hold down on the Fn key. At the same time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.

Don't know what exact HP laptop you have. For most HP's it is the F2 key, or the F4 key, that is the Display Toggle-Over key.
(Key has an empty rectangle on it, with a vertical line on each side)

Still no display on the external VGA monitor?
Hold the Fn key down again. (Bottom left of Keyboard)
Tap once more on the Display Toggle-Over key

NO display on the external VGA monitor, means you have a bad graphics chipset.

(By using an external VGA monitor, you are bypassing the Internal Display Switch, and the Display Assembly. (Internal monitor of laptop)

If you have a display on the external VGA monitor, you have a problem with;

1) Video Cable, (Display Panel Cable for HP)
or
2) Display Assembly

Post back with your results, and if you have a display on the external VGA monitor, we will go on.

If you do not have a display on the external VGA monitor, you are looking at motherboard replacement.

My Aspire one notebook screen remains black after switching on how do I fix it please I am a dad with a daughter missing her lap top

Hi there! I'm a dad too!!! Try these simple steps...

First, remove the battery and unplug the ac adapter then press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds to drain power from the laptop. Remove any external usb device or flash cards inserted in the computer.

Set aside the battery for the meantime and connect the ac adapter. Now turn the laptop on and see if it powers up. If it powers up, then you resolved the issue but if it doesn't, then you might have an LCD or Motherboard failure.

Hope it helps!

Can't connect to external monitor or to Sony bravia tv. When vga connected nothing happens at all on laptop but external monitor says " check cable" ( have tried another cable ). If connected in power off...

You need to:

- Connect everything with the laptop turned off
- Boot the laptop
- Use the Fn key plus F8 or F9 (I'm trying from a small picture of the keyboard!) to cycle through the external display options.

Is it possible to connect 2 external monitors to a dell xps m1330?

Yes, it is possible you can connect 2 or 2 billion external monitors, all you need is the extension cable, which is normally called a spilter or usb to vga spilter, and you can connect as amany as you want.
remember, USB to VGA adapter. or spilter.
else

There's plenty of evidence to indicate that using two screens is more effective than one; at least up to a certain point. There's also a strong indication that those two monitors need to be the same size, since your visual receptors seem to get confused by screens of different sizes. A recent Utah study indicates that using 2 20-inch monitors allowed people to complete tasks 44% faster than using 1 18-inch monitor, making a pair of 20-inch screens from Dell for under $600 sound like a steal. Since many people I know have switched to using a laptop as their primary machine no matter where they are, the trick of using two monitors (at least when docked) can be crucial.
The trick I use for connecting 2 external monitors to my own laptop is to connect one to the external video port on my laptop and a second monitor gets connected to a DisplayLink adapter. The adapter connects via USB allowing you to extend your desktop to another screen. They are sold under a variety of brand names which makes the adapters a little tricky to track down, but a quick search of eBay for USB to DVI Adapter turns up several options that are basically the same thing under several different names. DisplayLink also links to several online stores, although they do a lousy job of labeling which country each store serves.

How can I make fonts look good in an LCD monitor ?

The VGA connection should be fine; I have DVI and when I switched from analog, the difference was pretty minimal, to my eyes.

Is it just the fonts that are blurry, or everything? If fonts only, then this almost certainly suggests that running the ClearType tuner again would solve the problem. But this applies to all displays, so if one is good and the other is not, then this isn't it.

If everything is a little blurry, then this suggests one of two problems -- the first, you report trying, which is that the display adapter is set to a different resolution than the native resolution of the LCD monitor itself. Your display adapter should probably be able to drive 2 monitors (the built-in laptop monitor and the external monitor) at once. You should be able to set their resolutions separately.

Assuming Windows XP: Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings > at which point, you should see two monitors listed in a dropdown. Set them to their native resolutions there (using the slider bar, usually all the way to the right), and save.

If you do have the display resolutions set to their native resolutions for both monitors, then it's possible that your external monitor is messed up. A quick test would be to run the on-screen settings, usually from a button on the monitor itself. If what is displayed there is sharp and what is displayed from Windows is not, then this points to a problem with the display driver. If everything, even the on-screen display is blurry, then perhaps the monitor settings are messed up -- usually there's an option to restore to factory settings -- try that.

If that doesn't work, I'm probably out of ideas, unless you have further information.
