ON MY DELL 1700 PRINTER THERE ARE BLACK SMUDGES ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE ONLY ON THE COPY PAPER WHEN IT PRINTS BOUT 3 INCHES APART?

Check for any small paper jam. Check the rollers, also use an alcohol swab to clean the rollers and check for ink leaking. Check you ink pad, it could be time for a new one.

You have to order the lexmark photoconductors (C53034X) and replace them. it is easy. instructions in box.

what u can try is try only using black ink leave out the color ink

Although they are quite pricey, it sounds like a new toner cartridge is in order.

change ink cartdidge then try. check also paper jam.
if still problem then change ink cartridge then check.

If it is approx 3-4 smudges down the page. Replace the drum cartridge.

There is a tiny spec on the scanner glass. Cleaning it will make the line go away.

Hi, try to pull out complete process unit(cartridge) with toner box .You have cleaner(blue or green color) move this cleaner from right to left side 4 or 5 times.Note that cleaner MUST be in home position-right side when you finish.Check print.
If problem still persists, you must do following:take away small grey plastic cap on left side of cartridge,then push complete charge corona(part with cleaner on top of it) to left side just enough to lift right side of corona from cartridge.Pull out that corona and you can see drum and developer roller. Turn the gear on drum,and look for smudges on black developer roller.Try to clean smudges with brush or with dry cloth.Toner will again attract to that area,but regular.
