Convergence will not lock in on a kp-51hw-40

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Sony kp-57ws500 flashes blue, green, red then turns off

Re-insering the flyback wire is usually very easy. Push in and give a slght turn and check to see if grabbed. It sounds as if there is more issues than flyback wire. TV should turn on without one crt connected

Standby light flashes twice

The power supply board may have been damaged. Try leaving the TV unplugged overnight so the Tv can discharge and reset itself. If this doesn't work, the power supply board may need to be looked into by a TV repair shop.
If you have some electronic experience and wish to try to fix it yourself, you can most times find a Service Manual for your TV over the internet for less than $20. It will have schematics, diagrams and parts list for your TV.

KP-57HW40 w/5 red Blinks

That is basically an easy repair its on of the video uotputs on the green, red, or blue crt circuits thats bad or IC309 on the A board. I would recomend getting the service manual for your set to be able to pinpoint which Ic is actually at fault. I can post a link where you can get the manual and they will provide free step by step support to help you diagnose the problem and help locating replacement parts. Thats a free service they provide when you purchase the manual that they will email to you. If you want the manual let me know.

Standby Red Light Flashing

six flashes corresponds to "Horizontal deflection stop". In turn the "supposed malfunction" is then either Q5013 (H OUT) is broken and/or IC507 (H Jungle) is broken.
however i would check
Video out, IC7101, 7201, 7301 and others in C board circuit.
Q510, 516, 524 (A board).

There are actually three C boards, the CR, CG and CB boards. They are attached to the rear of the red, green and blue CRTs, respectively. I wouldnt attempt to repair the set myself. I would solicite the services of an authorized Sony servicenter.
