The display is broken on Inspiron 700M. I bought a replacement, but the computer turns itself off about 2 seconds after power up. Old display still works well enough to boot up, so I am borrowing a monitor to use this computer. It could be power supply turning off or BIOS. Is there a certain kinds of display that I need to buy?

hope ur a professional..as broken display can't b fixed by any means but only can b replaced..
in power-on mode, try to get output to an
external display unit/monitor using vga port..if there's proper display
in there..the problem is probably with either the 'lcd' or 'ccfl' or
'inverter circuit'..
these can b however ordered online or at the nearest chip-level spare store..
always better to rush to the authorized service at earliest or do contact ur system admin/vendor....
It sounds like the power jack is bad. If this is still under warranty - Dell would replace the motherboard. If this is no longer under warranty you can replace the power jack: Instructions for your model here http://forums.techguy.org/do-yourself-projects/573486-solved-inspiron-700m-dc-power.html
or hire someone to replace it: Comprehensive Computing is reasonable and provides a lifetime warranty: http://comprehensivecomputing.net/power_jack_repair.htm
If your battery is loose, it could be either the battery's latches are defective/broken... a new battery would fix that. Or the hook/latch mechanism on the laptop itself is defective and will not latch onto the battery, a replacement laptop case would probably fix that one.
Good luck.
I have a 700m, so I'm real familiar with the system. I see one of 2 possibilities. The headphone jack has a switch that disables the on-board speakers, if that is stuck or broken, then the jack/switch must be replaced. (Big hassle)
The other is easier to troubleshoot, then connection from the speakers to the MB goes through the Right hinge cover. Take the hinge cover off, check for broken wires (I has one, ***** to splice too)
