I spent a day researching this problem and the only fix is just a work around. Answer the phone and use the loudspeaker, turn the volume down and use phone as normal but now using the loudspeaker as the earpiece.

This sounds like the speaker in your handset which transmits sound to your ear is either faulty or turned down. Check the volume on your handset is set to max.
If the speaker in the handset is faulty - to trouble shoot this try using a handsfree kit which plugs in to the bottom of the phone and if the ear piece works correclty on a call through the handsfree eairpiece then your phone may have a fault.
