GE Profile Performance microwave vent not working

I have a GE Profile Performance microwave, it's over the counter. The microwave works but the vent fan and surface light do not. Is this an easy fix? Model # JVM1190SY.

That would almost certainly be a problem on the control circuit board. If the bulbs happen to short / blow out or if they are removed or installed while the microwave is still plugged in, there is often an arc which causes damage to the board. We repair regularly these boards for such problems for $32.50 nationwide.

You can fix it without the aid of a repairman. Simply unplug the microwave and remove the outer casing. There should be a few screws around the bottom edge and back panel. Once you have the unit open, look for where the power cord comes in. There should be a circuit board with a fuse mounted to it. This is your input line filter. The fuse should be a 20 amp appliance fuse that you can pick up at any hardware store (Lowe's and Home Depot both carry them). DO NOT op test with the outer casing removed. Potentials of about 14,000 volts are present in the high voltage network of a microwave oven. Close the unit up BEFORE you power it back up. Let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: GE Profile Spacemaker microwave surface lights

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Your vent flap could be taped or it could be faulty installation not allowing the vent to open. If you take the front vent cover off, you should be able to reach in above the fan unit and gently push the vent flap up, it should move freely with no binding. If it doesn't it is taped or blocked. If it is taped, gently putting upward pressure on the flap might release the tape. If that doesn't work the vent installation is blocking the flap. You might have to remove the unit from the wall (two people to do this) or disassemble the vent duct above the microwave and rework the interface for clearance.

hope this helps,

SOURCE: I have a GE Profile Spacemaker Microwave Touch Pad does not work

Sadly, GE does not make individual parts available for these controllers, so they cannot be repaired.

You have to replace the control panel sub-assembly (part number WB07X10733 in your case) and the best price I've found on that is $370.32 here (compared to $483.25 direct from GE).

In my opinion, this does not do much to inspire brand loyalty...

Or you may be able to find a whole oven on eBay for about that or less.

Sorry to bear bad news. Good luck.

Control panel on GE Profile Spacemaker microwave not working

You are right the control panel is very expensive, you can try the filter to see if you can get it working, but I must admit a new microwave oven sounds appealing.

Active Vent opens and closes continuously while unit is idle

I had GE look at the problem today (my microwave is less than a year old and under warranty). He replaced the cam louver and that seems to have fixed the problem. This is a small motor accessible by removing three screws and the active vent door. The whole visit was less than 15 minutes.<!-- from fixya rte -->
