I had the same problem as tlcmom1987. Just today it did something new with the dvd side. I was watching a movie and it just switched over to the vcr side like it was trying to play something and powered down. The problems started when it was less then a year old. I'm hoping someone can help us with this. I'll NEVER recommend Philips Magnavox. This is horrible.

The clicking is made by the laser head as it moves across the surface of the disk repeteadly trying to pick up the data signal and failing.
If it has used to work then it's clearly a dirt problem. If a cleaning disk has failed to work then the dust has gone all the way to the reading sensor. To clean it you will need top completely dismantle the unit access the optical mechanism, take off the cover and access the reading head - there blow with the can between the lens and the sensor then with a q-tip wipe the surface of the lens.
Try a different brand of blank dvd+r or -r. you will find that your dvd machine is fussy on what discs it plays. More exspensive dvd players are fussy with what dvd discs you put in, as cheaper dvd players would virtualy play most types of dvds.
mine did the same thing it just kept ticking when i wanted to play a disk, id take to top off with the four tiny little screws and hoover it, mine still makes a bit of noise but works x
There are several things you can do to try and solve your problem:
Make sure that the DVDs you try to play are encoded for the right region.
Make sure that the transportation lock (usually a plastic screw on the bottom of the unit), is not engaged.
Turn off player with disc inserted, unplug temporarily from wall outlet, plug back in and turn back on.
