Vivitar 5018 camera, awful or faulty?!

These "VINO" (Vivitar in name only) cameras are made by an overseas manufacturer of poor quality cameras. It is nearly impossible to take satisfactory pictures with these cameras.
The original Vivitar corporation went out of business more than a decade ago and the name was sold-off by their creditors to the highest bidder.
I suggest taking the camera back for a refund.

There is no built-in mic. The ViviCam does not record any audio.

first hit the home button and you will be able to change modes and stuff navigate just like the menu and there is a video mode picture mode and place where you can see all your stuff there is no external button or swith or anything though so it is kinda annoying but the quality is pretty good

IMHO, the ViviCam 8690 is the better camera. It has 8.1 Megapixels (5.1 on the 5018), larger preview screen. The 5.1 has 8x digital zoom and the 8690 only has 4x. Everything else pretty much compares.

You might want to consider not using the Vivitar software. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa.

Bring up the picture you want to delete and press the button with the picture of a garbage can...follow the on-screen instructions. If you want to delete everything on the card, go into the menu and scroll to "format"...follow the on-screen instructions.
