Verbatim 1tb external hard drive malfunction error message
I have a Verbatim 1tb external hard drive, USB, just started to come up with error message saying that Windows doesn't recognise the USB device, and that it may have malfunctioned. Am running XP on one laptop and Vista on the other, tried all the USB ports and no luck on anything.
Any help really appreciated, has family photos etc on it and last backup about 4 months ago... :-(

Im not sure what computer you have, but whenever I use an external hard drive on my computer, an icon either shows up on the toolbar, I dont think in your case thats happening or you would have obviously seen it, however if you have a start or home button on your toolbar on your regular desktop location then you can click to open your computer menu e.i. control panel, word, games,...etc.. look for your "computer" file, click to open, then look for "Hard Drives" or "Devices and Storage" also check and see if anywhere in those menus if there is a "Removable Devices and Storage" tab, if you find these menus and verbatim 53018 doesnt show up in any of your menu tabs then try creating a file on your computer and saving it to your hard drive in the "Save" file location, if its connected properly then you should see a message screen that asks you which location would you like to save your file, it should list all possible storage locations and hopefully Verbatim 53018 is listed.
That beeping signals a failure to communicate between the disk and the motherboard of the pc - the disk is defective. You have a slim chance of recovering what's on it by removing the actual disk from the external case and plugging it in the a desktop.
Try taking the drive out of the enclosure and buying a usb adaoter that will fir the interface the hard drive has...either EIDE or SATA, then hook that up to a usb port and see if the computer will load it. May be the controller card in the enclosure is your problem.
I have the same issue, however with my verbatim 500g its ok. i believe it is because the lacie is a desktop external and therefore is compatable with windows xp and 7 alone. Verbatim is a "portable" external hard drive which makes it compatible with several different systems. I would suggest returning it, I just formatted my old verbatim harddrive and set up mediaasharing. Through my router. You can actually route the lacie harddrive by going to my computer and right click the icon. Next go to share with; advanced settings and allow all. Then when you turn your ps3 on search for media servers... I would suggest to google media server for ps3 to get it all seet up. GOOD LUCK
