I have Vista for Business on a computer. Suddenly the log on picture shows on the screen, but the computer says the user information is unavailable and won't let me log in!

This sounds like a failed update. Restart the computer and hit either F2 or F8 or possibly Tab or Delete once the splash screen comes up. This should give you a windows startup option for safe mode. Click Safe Mode with Networking and let the computer startup. This will bypass all current startup items and possible problematic services. Login and start up Task Manager. View startup items and look to see if anything is starting up that says "Windows Update" or if anything else stands out that shouldn't be there. Names that are random garbled letters, etc. Disable these for normal startup. Now click on control panel under start menu and go to windows update and see if any updates failed to install. If they did, disable install automatically in windows update.

After this go to "run" and type in msconfig. Click normal startup, hit apply, when the message that says "restart computer" pops up click yes and let it restart the computer normally.

How do you put windows into safe mode?

Power on or Restart your computer, keep tapping F8 on the keyboard while it boots up. After few seconds, you'll be taken to the "Advanced Boot Options" with "Safe Mode" in the lists. Use the Up-Down arrow keys to highlight the "Safe Mode" and press enter on the keyboard to confirm the selected boot options. Black Screen with white texts will be displayed on the display, wait for few seconds until you see the windows logon Screen. You'll also see a confirmation message box asking you to confirm to boot into Safe Mode, click "yes" or "Ok" and proceed forward. There now you are in the Safe Mode.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Computer will not boot up. I have tried to boot up in safe mode, normal, safe mode with prompt command...nothing works, just goes back to the normal start up screen and keeps doing the normal start up over...

It looks like you're encountering an endless reboot? Here's what to do to find the actual error message.

  1. Turn on the computer, and press F8 after the POST screen but before Windows attempts to start to access the advanced startup options.
  2. Select "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure" and press Enter.
You should now get a blue screen with an error message and error codes. Please write these codes down and report back.

When plugging things into tower everythin freezes

Check inside the port to see if the contacts are not bent, try another network cable.

Also, start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking then plug in the cable.

To start in Safe Mode with Networking
restart computer
tap F8 just after BIOS splash screen (before windows)
select 'Safe Mode with Networking" from the advanced startup menu using the arrow keys.
Things may look weird when windows starts, because it is starting with minimal drivers.

If it seems to OK in safe mode with networking, there is probably some startup item that causes the issue. See this article at capitaltechmd.com on how to troubleshoot startup items.

Good Luck, hope this helps

Crazy notebook

Try booting to windows safe mode (maybe F8) without networking. If you can get to windows in safe mode run msconfig and disable everything in the startup tab. Also check the entries on the startup tab and see if there is anything suspicious. (possibly a virus?) List them here for help if you like. Once everything on the startup tab has been disabled restart your PC and see if it boots into windows normally. If yes, go back to safe mode, run msconfig again and enable the items on the startup tab. Do one at a time, reboot, etc. I know this is tedious but you'll have to do this to figure out what program is causing the problem. Another thing to try would be to disable all of your network devices in device manager (also in safe mode) and see if the PC will then boot to windows. You might need to uninstall and reinstall network device drivers.
