In most of the case, the problem is a defective display LCD panel, this problem in some terminology is called PIXEL RETAINING, it means the pixels are locked up, there is no good permanent solutions for it, you have to change the LCD panel.

a better solution is to replace the LVDS cables or just reseat them as the contractor stated it could be a motherboard but about 90% of the time it is actually the LVDS cables ohm load that puts toomuch load on the motherboard. the cheapest solution if out of warranty is buy an lvds cable and simply replace it if the issue still exist after the cable is replaced it will be a motherboard issue but any time you have red green or blue speckles on a vizio TV you should always swap the cable first since quite simply put it is the most common point of failure with that issue.

Faulty T-con board or mainboard (AKA tuner board)...the tapping would make me believe it to be the connection of the LCD panel to the T-con board that is causing the issue! This board is located on the top of the tv while looking down from the back. Replace it and you will be good to go!
