My toshiba satellite A505-S6969 will not let me switch users. When I try the screen goes black and I have to just turn it off. I tried downloading the switch users registry thing off the microsoft update site (suggested from toshiba support) but it didn't work. And Toshiba support couldn't do anything either, they wanted me to do a system restore but that would be to much of a pain. Help!! What else can I do?

Is there another user already set up on the computer? If not that might be the problem.

System restore is the way to go. Just make sure you stop any antivirus running before you do it.

SOURCE: want to replace cmos battery in Toshiba Satellite A10

On Toshiba laptops you hit the ESC key as soon as you turn it on & then you
are given the option to hit the F1 key to enter bios.

As to the cmos battery, they couldn't have hidden it better if it was the Queen's diamond!

It is near the bottom of the laptop on the right side, almost directly beneath the pause/break key.
Problem is, you have to disassemble the entire laptop to get at it!

Disassembly instructions for the Satellite A10 are here

Best of luck

SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite a215-s7437 will not boot at all - black screen

It sounds like two possible things. One thing may be that your screen is not working anymore. Can you get a monitor and plug it into your port located on the side of your laptop? If your screen pops up on the monitor this tells us your screen is either in need of replacement or a connection may be loose.

If that is not the case......

Another thing is your hard drive may not be initiating. If you feel confident enough I would open the back where the hard drive is located and make sure the hard drive is not loose. Does it give you any beeping sounds when you turn it on? Can you count the number of beeps? This will tell you what the problem is on boot up. Also, is it a black screen with a cursor blinking?

SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

This problem is likely caused by overheating. The CPU reaches a temp to high and shuts the system down. When you try to turn it on the system is still to hot and it will not let the computer power on. You can try blowing out the fans and heat sink with an air compressor or can of compressed air. If this does not help the problem you may need to have thermal compound reapplied. If that does not fix it it will need a new heatsink/fan/

Toshiba Satellite A505 - Most of the time when I turn it on the screen is grey, with no text.

This sounds like a bad display on the laptop. Hook up an external monitor to the vga port on the laptop. You may need to toggle the display to output to the external monitor. This is generally accomplished by pressing the "FN" key + one of the F# keys. Look for an icon that resembles a monitor or it may say LCD. If the graphics display correctly on the external monitor, then you will need to replace the computer screen.

The hard drive seems to run almost constantly.

Probably a lot of background tasks... check your Task manager under processes and applications to see what is currently running that requires hard drive access.

When I turn the cpu on it shows the Toshiba page then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left. It will not do anything afterwards. Please help. Thanks!

We ran a typical Satellite A200 battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.
