NVX200 GPS Map Locked

Maps of Europe for Garmin GPS devices can be purchased on line. You'll need a USB cable to connect the Garmin to your computer. Then, with the USB cable connected, go to http://www.garmin.com

On the web site, first register your product. Then look for "Support" and follow their instructions for updating your software. (Software updates are free.) After you've done that, look for "Maps" on the menu at the top of the screen. By the way, maps are huge files, so plan on the map download and installation taking several hours or maybe even overnight to update your maps even if you have a fast internet connection.

The maps are stored in specific mapset files with *.img extension in the flash memory of the GPS unit. Each mapset file contains one or many maps in it. Beside that, the Garmin GPS navigator can also recognise and load up one additional mapset file from SD card residing in the "Garmin" folder and named as "gmapsupp.img".

Here are the mapset files supported by Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS navigator:

• gmapbmap.img - the default base map
• gmapprom.img - the primary mapset
• gmapprom1.img - the secondary mapset
• gmapoem.img - the OEM mapset that cannot be unselect by user (if it exist)
• gmapsupp.img - the supplemental mapset which you can have one in the GPS flash memory and another one in the attached SD card.

Therefore, the Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS supports up to 6 mapset files, including 1 in SD card. Normally new maps installed by the user will be stored in gmapsupp.img.

You will lost all the maps in the previous mapset file if it is overwritten by a new file with same filename. If you want to keep the existing maps, ensure that you store the mapset file with an unused filename (from the 5 filenames above). Alternatively, you can make use of special tools to merge new maps into existing mapset file.

You can view the name of your base map in Tools > Settings > System > About > Basemap.

You can view the name of maps in the other mapset files in Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info. There, you can tell the GPS to load the map by checking on its name, or not to use the map by unchecking it.

In case there are 2 or more non-overlaping maps available for the same location, the map with the highest priority number (defined in the map itself) will be used by the GPS.

Note that certain map which are locked by vendor need a 25 bytes unlock key stored in a *.unl file in the same folder and with the same name as the mapset file where the locked map is stored in.

The map may be unselected. To select it;

• Press TOOLS (the spanner icon) in the bottom right corner of the WHERE TO and VIEW MAP screen
• Press SETTINGS (or LOCALE on models that don't have a settings icon)
• Press MAPS and then MAP INFO at the bottom of the screen

This should show you the maps installed on your satnav. There should be a tick beside the map name if it's selected. If not press the map name and the tick will appear. This should solve the problem.

If this does not solve the problem the map may be locked or deleted. If the map is locked it should say so at the map name. If there's no map name then the map may be deleted.

If the map has been deleted you may be able to download it again from the garmin website depending on how old it is. Generally you can download the map for about 6 months after it was first installed.

• To download the map again go to www.garmin.com
• Click on the myGarmin tab at the top of the page.
• If you haven't already registered your satnav do so on this page by clicking "Register your garmin product" and follow the prompts
• When you're registered log in using your username and password
• Click on the myMaps tab at the top of the page
• Your satnav name will be on the left hand side of the page and your map name in the centre. On the right it will either say "No update available" or "Update available"
• If there's an update available downloading and installing it will solve the problem but you'll have to pay for it. Alternatively click on where it says "Details" in blue under your map name
• This brings you to a screen where, if the map is not too old, you get the option to download it again. Click on "Download again" and follow the prompts to reinstall it.
  

If it's locked on the main screen and won't load, follow the below process.

To reload the software:
1. Connect your device to the computer 2. Make a backup of your addresses and favorites if you wish 3. In File Explorer, right click on the device (removable drive) >> Format 4. Start the Desktop 5. Go to My Mio >> Reinstall the software 6. Go to My Mio >> Recover Keys 7. You can now reinstall the maps from the Maps tab. If you downloaded a map update, make sure to use the downloaded file. 8. Go to My Mio / Voice Transfer and re-install the voice files

The on / off switch on top has 3 positions, it locks all the way right, when the unit is on make sure you have it in the middle.

There are icons near power button that indicate right side lock.

Make sure you have the file gmapprom.img on your Nuvi. It sounds like you just have the base map file.

You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.
