Upload DV video camera to Mac.

How do I upload the DV video camera to my Mac?
I have followed the instructions to plug in the firewire to the computer and camera. turned it on, but nothing shows up. do i need a driver?

    it's possible that the firewire has gone bad, however it's a new mac. i don't have any other devices that use firewire, so nothing to test it with. is there another way to test the firewire port>?

I would be inclined to suspect that the firewire on your Mac has gone bad - it does happen now and again.
Is it that the camera doesn't show up in iMovie or does it not even show on the desktop as an untitled drive?
I have an unknown brand HD Camera that only has USB and it will not show up on my Mac - but if I take the card out and put it into the card reader it shows up as a drive and the Video files are there to download.

    Hi Dana


    We could be on a hiding to nothing here - your camera is not listed as "being supported" on Apple's iMovie support pages (last updated in April). It lists a number of other JVC cameras but not yours.


    It might be worth visiting the place where you bought your mac with your camera to see if they can make it work on one in the shop, (take your cable with you). That way you would be certain.


    If it doesn't work there it's either the camera, lead OR compatibilty. If it does work then the problem is with your Mac.


    That's about all I can suggest at the moment.

You could try the cannon website to see if there are any driver updates for your model. Cannon may have a users forum, which you might be able to pin point the problem there, If that doesn't work try the mac website for updates etc.

This type of camera usually downloads video over a Firewire (DV, IEEE1394) connection. Some mini-DV cameras have a USB connection but it is used only for stills.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card. As you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My Samsung mini-DV camera came with the correct lead. I did not need a driver, just some sort of video editing software that can accept input. Even Windows Movie Maker that ships with Windows will work.

Final Cut may not sync with the Camcorder. I assume you're running firewire into the g4. Try capture as an analog device.

most cameras have a mini dv connector slot someplace it will go mini dv connector to usb or rca or firewire, your pc must have a vidoe card that will accept the rca plug or a firewire or usb connector and then you usually need the camera software that allows computer to recognie the camera in TWAIN download selection.or video software that will recognize the input source(camera type).

Panasonic PV-GS35 will not connect to iMac, so can't upload video from mini DV cassettes into iMovie. when I connect with my USB cable, nothing shows up on the iMac saying that the camera or a "N0_NAME"...
So if it's miniDV and you have a firewire cable, it should work. Have you followed this sequence:
If your battery is sufficiently charged to run the cam for an hour's worth of tape, fine, otherwise connect cam to AC power. With cam OFF, connect Firewire cable to Mac and cam. Open iMovie, name your project and create so that the viewer screen comes up. Turn on the cam. At this point, your Mac should, within moments, say "camera connected". Cam needs to be set on "playback" mode for capture. Then click "import" button and your Mac will control the cam.

If you still get a "no camera connected" you have to consider the possibility that either the firewire cable is bad or the firewire port on cam or Mac is bad. If you have more than one firewire port on your Mac, try switching. An Apple store should be able to help you determine if you have a bad cable or cam port, if you take both in to try on their Mac. Hope this gets you on track.

Cannot download video, only Card pictures
I do not know MACs, but a standard 4-pin to 6-pin firewire (IEEE1394) is needed. On Windows XP, plug it in, run Windows Movemaker and you are good to go. By the way, a "DV cable" is a firewire cable.

If your MAC cannot "see" your camcorder, try another firewire device to see if your MAC is the culprit, or drag your camcorder and firewire cable to a friend's PC running Windows XP and see if it works.

Uploading to computer
connect tothe computer with the firewire cable, plug your camcorder into the mains and open windows movie maker on your pc and press play on the camcorder and capture video in windows movie maker. Easy.
