Probably the laptop is basically fine, and it is a Windows problem, though the hard drive may have failed - remove your hard drive and copy your important data to another hard drive (probably another computer). You will need special cables to do this (cheap) - USB to 2.5" (laptop) hard drive cables. Download or purchase a (free) 'live' copy of Ubuntu liinux and put that CD in the CD/DVD drive; restart the laptop. If that loads and runs OK (it only uses the CD, not your hard drive), the Windows on your hard drive is corrupted but your laptop is fine. If your data is not important then try reinstalling Windows, as corrupted Windows not letting you in may well be the cause of the problem. All existing programs and data will be erased when you do this. Instead, try another hard drive if possible, and install Windows on that.

If this is true than the backlight has probably been damaged. The small flourescent tubes that generate light through the LCD display.
