It could be that there is algae growing inside the tank of the filter. You may want to vacuum to waste to get the algae out of the pool and clean out the filter. If you have a Cartridge or DE filter, you will need to do an acid bath for the grids. Take the internal parts out of the filter and clean with bleach water, use bleach water on the tank also.

If you have a sand filter, you will need to empty out the sand, clean internal parts and tank with bleach water then fill with new sand.

Can i use a sand filter with the intex krystal clear saltwater system?

Yes you can.
The saltwater chlorinator is connect to the outlet water pipe from the sand filter before the water returns to the pool.
Depending upon the model of the saltwater chlorinator It may need to be mounted horizontally or vertically, check with the installation instructions..

I have a haywood ec 40 filter and pump i cannot mget my de to coat the filter fingers a charge of de lasts only a few hours ,when i take the filter apart to check it all the de is at the bottom

First, I would make sure that you are adding the DE correctly to coat the inside. Make sure that you close the pool filter drain and the vent valve. Prime and start the pump. Air trapped in the system will vent to the pool. Once the air has escaped the filter and a steady stream of water is returning to the pool, the filter is ready for pre-coating. Be sure not to operate the filter for more than one minute without the pre-coat charge.Scoop 5 lbs of DE into through the skimmer as fast as the plumbing will take it. You could also have a hole or tear in one of the "fingers", in which case you need to replace it.

If my pool has an algae problem now . can i convert to a saltwater filtration system w/o draining the pool ?

You need to rid the pool from algee. When you say saltwater filtration do you mean a chlorene generator? It generates chlorene from the sodium chloride that you maintain in pool. This still means you need chlorene to kill the algee. Shock the pool with chlorene shock. After allowing the pump filter to mix, let stand ovenight. Vacuum green slime from bottom to waste. Your pool supplier can help you . Kill the algee then start up chlorene generator.

Dial a flow question

Ok the first on the PSV valve. the 1/2 position should really be 1+2. You have two linlets to your pump. One from the skimmer and one from the main drain in the floor of the pool. When you select port 1 it will be one or the other perhaps 1 would be skimmer and 2 would main drain. You can select one and see if the flow stops in the skimmer. That will tell you which is which, depends on how it was plumbed. Position 1+2 combines the two flows. I normally select both, If my pool gets a lot of grass and leaves, I select skimmer only or when I vacuum. I select main drain only when there is more debris at the bottom. OK recirc is only recirculating within the piping system bypassing the filter. You can dowload a complete manual of your filter and components from www.haywardnet.com. Green water: Ok your chemicals are right? Free Chlorine, total chlorine? hardness, calcium, pH, alkalinity? Well most pool companies want you to buy some algaecide and that can't hurt, but I'd shock your pool if it's dark green I'd put it 4-6 gallons of liquid chlorine, if its light green 2-4 gallons. This is when I'd use recirculate. Allow this to mix without filtering for a couple of hours. Turn the pump off and allow to set overnight. In the morning you should have much clearer water, with green slime sitting on the bottom. Vacuum this to waste very gently so as not to remix algee.IF this doesn't work you'll need som floculant and repeat the opeation folling the directions on the floculant Restart filter, keep chlorine level high above 5-10ppm for a day or two and keep filtering. If it is still cloudy now,add some filter aid. In hot weather, don't let that free level go below 4ppm. Don't allow anyone to swim while chlorene level is high. Be sure to us test strips that indicate free and total chlorine.

How to open pool, fill sand filter with water?

I happen to have a copy of the users manual for this pool filter. These are the instructions for operating your filter.

1. Be sure correct amount of filter sand media is in tank and
that all connections have been made and are secure.
2. Depress Vari-Flo control valve handle and rotate to
BACKWASH* position. (To prevent damage to control valve
seal, always depress handle before turning.)
3. Prime and start pump according to pump instructions (be
sure all suction and return lines are open), allowing the filter
tank to fill with water.
WARNING: ALL SUCTION AND
DISCHARGE VALVES MUST BE OPEN WHEN
STARTING THE SYSTEM. FAILURE TO DO
SO COULD CAUSE SEVERE PERSONAL
INJURY.
Once water flow is steady out the waste line, run the pump for
at least 2 minutes. The initial back-washing of the filter is
recommended to remove any impurities or fine sand particles
in the sand media.
4. Turn pump off and set valve to RINSE position. Start pump
and operate until water in sight glass is clear—about 1/2 to 1
minute. Turn pump off, set valve to FILTER position and
restart pump. Your filter is now operating in the normal filter
mode, filtering particles from the pool water.
5. Adjust pool suction and return valves to achieve desired
flow. Check system and filter for water leaks and tighten
connections, bolts, nuts, as required.
6. Note the initial pressure gauge reading when the filter is
clean. (It will vary from pool to pool depending upon the
pump and general piping system). As the filter removes dirt
and impurities from the pool water, the accumulation in the
filter will cause the pressure to rise and flow to diminish.
When the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI (0.55-0.69
BAR) higher than the initial "clean" pressure you noted, it is
time to backwash (clean) the filter (see BACKWASH under
Filter Control Valve Functions.)

Hayward eC-40 pump losing pressure very fast

A better way to clean the filter tubes in the EC40 is to remove the filter tube assembly and soak it in a 5 gallon paint pail that is filled with a solution of water and a 20% muriatic acid, available at hardware and home center stores. Be very careful handling the muriatic acid. Don't splash it around.

Mix it in a 1-to-1 ratio with water and soak the assembly for at least 8 hours. Keep the soaking pail out of the reach of kids and animals.

Remove the assembly, properly dispose of the acid mix and refill the pail with clean water. Soak again for 3 to 4 hours, then reassemble your filter.

Some pool guys say it isn't necessary to soak the tubes in clean water because the muriatic acid will not harm the pool water and will reduce the pH if it's too high. I've always soaked them to be safe.

This is a link to the Hayward manual that describes the process:
