Hayward sand s166t. leaking from bottom

Are you sure it is leaking from a spot "Originating" at the bottom? Many times this is what is seen, but the water is actually traveling down the side. If at the bottom, you either have a cracked tank, or the drain cap is loose, missing the cap gasket or it is on "Cross Threaded"? But... most likely from experience, it leaking at the valve clamp.

I have a hayward s166t filter, guage reads 0 and sight glass water does not swirl when backwashed

Does it show pressure when in "Filter" mode? If not, then your pump is either not primed, Impeller is plugged, or there is not enough water in the pool, you are sucking air.

When filter is set on

The valve on top of the filter has several settings. What is yours set on. If it is set on Backwash or Rinse or Waste, it will allow the pump to send water out the drain. If you have new sand, you probably should run on the Rinse setting for awhile, then switch to Filter.

How to replace sand in the filter

Remove the top, unscrew the water difuser and dip it out with a small can. Under normal circumstances, you will only have to remove the top 5 inches of sand and replace with new.If you have to remove it all, when it comes to putting in the new, make sure you have water over the top of the pipes in the bottom before you start. This will protect the pipes from breakage.

I dont know which setting

You vacuum in the regular filter setting; as for clear water you'll need to look at your overall water chemistry and/or take a water sample to the location where you get your chemicals and see what they have to say about your alkalinity, chlorine, pH and other readings.

My filter valve is about 8 years old.(Just FYI)

For best results, replace the spider gasket in your multi port valve (multi port valve, right?) When selecting a mode, only go in a clock wise direction.

Push Pull valve? I dont thnk so but if it is, does not hurt to lube the "o" rings.

After changing the sand in

It sounds to me like your pool filters multi-port valve was not put on correctly after you put the new sand in. Since I can't see your particular filter, I would recommend that you read the section in the users manual about reassembling the valve after you have changed the media. Follow the step by step guide and you should be able to get it back on correctly.

You can check the impeller for clog. If your pump basket is cracked or out of place **** will get past it and lodge in the impeller and cut water flow way down.
Remove the basket and reach back into the impeller with a screwdriver or the like and feel in the center for soft stuff. If you have any, work it out by working it in a counter clockwise direction till it loosens. Than reach in and pull it out with long nose pliers.
It sounds like this could be your problem and this should fix it.

Sand is leaking into the

More than likely your Folding Umbrella Lateral Assembly is damaged. There are 10 laterals that have like screens on them. If they break, then sand can come out. Also if you have had it apart, the center support they screw into could be bad. IF you change sand, put some water in first so when you add sand you don't break the laterals. Also if your ph gets too low you can actually be dissolving sand. You can download a manual for your filter at www.haywardnet.com
