Hi Warren,

The connections are the same - regardless if knob and tube wiring or NM/BX cable method is used. It's actually easier to follow with individual wires than in cables - here's how it is connected:

1) In all cases, a wire is connected between source power neutral to the light fixture's white wire or the white or silver colored terminal screw.

2) Source hot is applied to the first switch's "shunt" or "common" terminal (brass or dark colored screw).

3) Two wires (called "travelers") should be connected between the first switch's remaining 2 terminals (called "traveler terminals and are white or silver colored screws) directly to the second switch's traveler terminals (again, white or silver colored screws) and it does not matter which traveler wire goes to which traveler terminal.

4) The second switch's "shunt" or "common" terminal (brass or dark colored screw) is connected to the light fixture's black wire or brass or dark colored screw.

Good luck!

I have a siemens 40-200 panel. There are 7 knob & tube circuits still in the house that aren't accessible to rewire. Been told that GFI breakers connected to these circuits will pass code. any

Yeah, as long as you run your GFI's on the same circuit then you would probably be good. I say "probably" because I do not know your local codes, but for places I know it would be. Hope I could help.

Is it possible to hook this timer up to a circuit that normally uses two three-way switches to control three lights? It would be OK if the timer worked only when the remaining three way switch was in one...

No.
If you have Woods in-wall timer, it is for single-pole application only.

Open following link to see timers rated for 3-way application, and links to each 3-way timer and manual for that timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028

Remember when installing a 3-way timer, the timer replaces only one of the switches.
In all applications, the remaining 3-way switch is rewired slightly to accommodate the timer operation.
Some 3-way timers can only replace the 3-way switch that has the hot wire from breaker.
Some 3-way timers require additional wire run between the timers.
The most versatile 3-way timer is Honeywell Aube: it can replace either 3-way switch.
Be careful and read manual wiring diagrams to see how to rewire remaining 3-way switch.

How do i install a 3 way switch with 12/2 wire?

Three-way switches require a three-wire cable: the power wire, the neutral wire, and the traveler or switch wire.
The cable should also have a ground wire, or a total of four wires in the cable. The system also requires three-way switches. The switches are wider than regular single-pole switches and they have three terminal screws on the side (sometimes back) of the switch housing. Two terminals will be on one side of the switch housing; one terminal on the other side.

I have a delta dc-380 planer that has a 3-prong plug (looks to be modified by last owner) and I have a 4-prong plug where my dryer is. Can you help me to re-wire the planer for a 4-prong plug? thanks in...

Is it a single phase motor model 22-680, or a three phase motor model 22-681. The single phase motor will have a 3 prong outlet where the blades are in tandem and the ground is longer than the blades so it is grounded before electricity gets to the planer. A three phase motor will have to be wired directly to your house electricity without a power cord. You will have to get an electrician to hook that up so you are within the building codes of your area.

You can get a 4 prong dryer plug from home depot and wire it. I think they cost about $15 or so. Just remove the old cord and wire the new one the same way that the old cord had been wired, black to black, white to white, and red to red. Ground the green wire to a grounded screw inside your switch box. Turn your breaker off before you plug in the new cord just in case you wired it incorrectly. Then turn the breaker back on. This way the breaker will trip immediately and you will not damage anything, MAINLY YOURSELF. 220v is nothing to sneeze at. And if you feel at all uncomfortable doing this you should probably get someone qualified to rewire it. Be safe.

Wiring dimmer to knob and tube

You should attach the green grounding wire to the metal box using a green grounding screw. You don't want to leave the wire loose, as any contact with the switch screws could cause a short.

Also, you should wrap the switch with at least 2-3 complete wraps of electrical tape to prevent the screws from contacting the sides of the wall box.

As a side note, you should likely have a complete check done on your house if you still have knob and tube wiring installed, as the dangers associated with this very old wiring are many. Typically, older K&T wiring was used in homes well over 60 years ago and houses then only had minimal electric current drawing devices, such as lights and a couple of other small appliance devices (toasters, coffee pot, TV and radio, etc.)

The problem with older homes with K&T wiring still in use, is that the circuits can be easily overloaded with modern electric convinences and lead to a possible fire situation, especially since there is no dedicated ground to help mitigate short circuits, etc. Also, the rubber based insulation used on this type of wiring deteriorates after 40 years (+/-) and rodents tend to chew on exposed wires in attics and crawl spaces.

I don't wish to alarm anyone, but as a Licensed Master Electrician, I've seen and done my share of repair work involving Knob & Tube wiring and even had a couple of homes that had a mix of it and other, newer wiring, that I've completely rewired. Many states require K&N wiring be replaced before a home can be sold, so getting a jump on it will make your home safer and better suited to operate all the devices that people tend to have, in today's society.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

I need a wiring diagram for a 1986 strat style washburn guitar with humbucker and two single coils pickups. three toggle switches and a volume and a tone knob

Hi vallast

Here is a diagram on how to wire your 3 toggle setup.
3cd7a58.gif There are endless variations on how to do it. Pickups can be switched in and out of phase, in parallel or series.

Check out here for more details on the above wiring diagram.

Strat style wiring is done with a 5 way switch generally. Using the toggles allows you to rephase vitually all the pickups getting heaps of different tones. Thanks for using FixYa, good luck. A decent guitar Tech can easily help you to rewire your Axe. If you get stuck. hit me back here and I will help you further:) Cheers.

Replacing old light switch, only use copper wires?

First, aluminum wire is rarely used anymore, in residential. It's pretty costly to rewire the entire house and you would have to bring it up to the latest codes and have inspections . Usually the single pole switch is used to break the circuit on the "Hot" leg only and the neutral is usually straight wired to the load (Bulb). Based on your description, I would think it's the socket. If it was the switch, it would have sparks or something, not the bulb/ socket. You may have "Blown" the connection in the socket. Kill the breaker and check it.

Hope this helps.

Can a lang griddle wired for 3 phase by rewired to run 1 phase?

Yes, there is a chart on page 6 of the service manual that tells you which wires to switch(according to your model#) to change to single phase.

Rewiring

Usually if you need to rewire your on/off/knob, it is because of a faulty knob switch inside..or broken wires to the knob have come unsoldered.etc. If you have replaced the old knob with a new one,and is an exact same type with same wiring points. you can easily resolder to the orginal areas and it will work. Broken wires from the switch could be resecured to the post they came off of if you have access to the schematics diagram to your on/off switch. If you dont, you can download a PDF file from your manufactorers site..searching for your particular make and model c.b. then download the manual...at a cost or for free.. al
