Not much data to go on here. The latch on the door has a spring that holds it down in the locked position. when you pull the handle the latch goes up and you pull the door open. You will have to take the door apart and see if the spring broke or the plastic tab that holds the end of the spring is broken.

Door will not close and stay closed. The latch appears to be malfunctioning.

A lot of times this is a broken spring or spring mount or the door latch heads.

If I had your brand and model number, I could offer more specific help.

Maytag MMV4205 door won't stay shut.

After tearing apart my microwave, I found a little spring broke off the latches. Open the door to the microwave, pop off the plastic piece that the latches on the door go through. You will see a spring behind the latch. If the spring is not connected to the latch it won't operate properly. The spring was held onto the latch with a tiny plastic piece that broke off. An easy solution instead of buying a new latch is to heat up one side of the spring without burning yourself and melt it through the latch piece where it was originally connected then put everything back together.
Hope this helps,

Maytag microwave model mmv1153baw light won't shut off and won't start

Hi,

Either the latch in door (spring related) is not in the correct location or you have a door switch issue and its not expensive to fix if you husband is handy. Part number you can use is 28QBP0495 or the factory one 3405-001034 (more expensive). This issue is common and these switches are located inside the control panel on the left side, the switch you seek is the lowest one in the bracket of three. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

Why does the light / safety switch stay on when the door latches shut ?

Most likely there is a part missing from the door latch mechanism that you need. This probably broke off when the handle failed. It would be a tab or wedge shaped piece of plastic that strikes the door switch and pushes the switch closed when the door is completely shut. You will need to find that piece and glue it back on or get a new handle assembly from Samsung.

Our panasonic inverter microwave (3 years old) needs repeated hard slams to shut the door so that the light goes off and the microwave will work. How do we fix this problem as I'm afraid we are going to...

We have a Panasonic Inverter microwave. Door became difficult to close and had to slam it hard while holding themicrowave to keep it from moving. When opening the door did not pop open but did unlatch. I ordered a new door lever from Panasonic. When got part I removed case from microwave and lever was okay. I then removed the perimeter strip on the inside of the door. With a screwdriver I stretched the spring at the bottom that keeps the door latches pulled downward. Spring still worked just not as stiff. Put perimeter piece back on the door and replaced housing (which I didn't need to remove in the first place), and then put a small drop of vegetable oil on the cams where the door latches hit when closing door. Viola, door opens and closed as new. Problem solved. Diagnosis: over time the latch tension spring hardens and gets too stiff. P.S.: I had several similar springs as backup in case I screwed up the original one.

I have a Samsung SMH9187ST microwave, it is about 2 years old. The door won't stay closed. It is worthwhile to try to fix it or should I just replace it?

If you can lift the plastic door latch catches with no resistance, it is most likely the spring/plastic connector. I removed the inside black plastic bevel with a jewelers flat screw driver, prying from the latch side's external edge. Once it was started, I could pull it off with a gentle lift, watch the bottom and inside edge (Thanks Lukas Patterson). I took out the black plastic latch, drilled a hole near the broken piece and all was good. Updating, as my original fix wore out. I ordered a replacement latch prior to repairing the existing latch, same directions to gain access, just use the spring on the new latch and press on the plastic cover to re-seat.

How to install latch and spring in microwave door

You need to know where the 'catches' are inside the choke cover on the door to remove it carefully without breaking anything or marring the cover. You might get inside and find that the post for mounting the return spring has broken and that is part of the outer door panel.

Panasonic inverter door won't shut, light stays on.

Thanks for the tips - here is what I did (my wife calls me the Canadian McGuyver!) After taking off the plastic frame (using instructions in Solutions noted above) I used the metal part of a key ring and hooked one end to the spring and looped it around the thick finger/protrusion at the bottom. _197.jpg
