When your engine is running at say 1200 rpm, the transmission is at zero speed with the clutch depressed. When you engage the clutch the first gear is still at zero speed trying to engage with a 1200 rpm crankshaft. In a normal transmission, they have a "synchronizer" which speeds up the gear to match the speed of the crankshaft so the gears mesh smoothly.
When you turn off your engine, the crankshaft is at zero rpm so it can go into gear with the zero rpm transmission. Bottom line...you have a problem with your synchronizer on your transmission. If you are lucky...a transmission shop could fix it without an overhall. But it needs to be diagnosed because it doesn't sound good.

SOURCE: push on clutch and caR WONT GO IN GEAR UNLESS MOTOR OFF

This sounds like the clutch cable has broken. Not that it couldn't be the diaphram on the pressure plate, but the cable is more than likely the problem.

It won't go into gear while running because the clutch isn't being depressed putting the transmission in a position to allow the synchronizers to work.

When you turn it off, you can easily shift into any gear, but trying to start in gear makes the car try to move. You can verify this by putting it into high gear and trying to start it, you'll still move but less due to clutch slippage. If you put it into reverse, it will try to go backwards-so don't do that!

good luck!

SOURCE: I changed my car battery, now my 2008 Nissan Altima key fob won't work

There is a special procedure involved in keying your fob to your car once the battery has been changed. You must lock and open the door with your key. Turn the ignition to "on"(not start) then push the fob's open and close button, then shut off ignition. This procedure is done everything the key battery is changed. Hope this can help you!

1997 Nissan Hardbody 2WD jumps or lurches when taking off in first gear. The easier you try to let out on clutch it seems the worse it gets.

Yes it is is an automatic, it can be caused by a high idle. If it is a manual, it is the clutch plate being warped or a worn bearing.

Hi, My car goes into gears whilst idling without even pushing the clutch in. any ideas as to what they might have done wrong? they were fixing the engine before this as the crank shaft pulley broke.

You mean the stick just falls into gear? while engine is running and the car lurches forward? I would say the gates are wore out in the transmission, but even at that, it should not go in gear unless you have the clutch pushed in, IF it were to try to engage while car is running, the shifter would come in contact with the gear in the trans and grind because the clutch would not be engaged. Maybe somehow the linkage got bent on the transmission while they were replacing the pulley on the car or a bushing broke on the shifter linkage?

you most likely need cranj angle sensor. common issue on your model car. car will just quit running, because it looses signal from crank sensor. replace it.

Cant get into any gears at all while my car is on but when the car is off it perfectly slides in

sounds like a clutch problem. if the clutch is constantly engaged, you won't be able to get it into gear. Check your clutch/brake fluid level and perhaps you will have to replace the master or slave cylinders. First, try bleeding the clutch line (it's hydrolic, with a nipple like a brake line, near the front of the transmission, accessible from underneath the car.)
Also, you can test this theory pretty easily. If you put it in first, and put in the clutch, and start the car, does it lurch forward? If it does, your clutch is not releasing.

Transmission question

Not sure the issue can be put to rest but here ya go.

yes there are clutches in the tranny for shifting and the disengage the motor and driveline while shifting. The torque converter aslo has slippage in it (hence being able to sit at a stoplight in gear at idle and not move). So he is correct,

That said, any time you add additional wear and tare on something it will reduce the life expectancy. Shifting from R to D while moving puts a little more wear on the clutches, but is not muderous.

Doing tear drops where you slam it from one to the other while moving fast or at full throttle, that is murderous!!!

Peace,
