For the second time in just under a year my shutter has refused to work.
When i take a shot a hear a faint movement of the mirror but very weak. then all's black on the lcd (obviously) then the same old error 99 message.
The place I originally took the camera to in order to fix this the first time didnt know what to do so had a canon repair person pick it up themselves and take it off in which they (apparently) replaced the whole shutter system for a new one charging me 100 pounds. The warranty for this under the repair shop was only 6 months and since expired.
Looking through Canon's sites ive seen that all cameras are under warranty for a year after purchase, so shouldnt my 'brand new' shutter also come under the same warranty as it was installed by canon themselves?
I really cannot afford to have this fixed again so I am really desperate to get this fixed, I 've even read that it may be a case of a plastic pin that lifts the mirror inside that has been known to break on the 300 causing this problem,
but then I dont know?
Also Ive done all the obvoius things such as cleaning, and checking the battery etc and the problem is definatly the same as before.
Ive emailed Canon but have since heard nothing back and i cannot afford to speak to them for half hour on there premium number.
A defective shutter assembly unit with a broken plastic rod, which I have repaired and/or replaced with another.

Shutter mechanism of canon 300d lasts for around 5000 shots or less!! yes it is made of plastic materials thats why here in the philippines I am making my own metal replacement parts that lasts. Unfortunately, in your country you cant do anything but to replace it with same original replacement parts. avoid using faster shutter speed and continuous shots.
300d or 350d and the likes, even the nikon models has the same plastic features. the cost of plastic model compared to the metal model is way way low! what do you expect? I observed that units these days lasts for only up to three years or less when it comes to cheap models.. make sure warranty last at least for a year, when something goes wrong within warranty period, resale the unit.
If you are trying to become a pro fotografer buy metal features, it cost more but its cheaper in the long run.

Yeah I seem to be finding out about the plastic shutter system and that seems to be the overall fault.
I think im going to buy a new camera body as the cost or repair isnt worth it. I'm thinking the 400d but then I cant seem to find out anywhere if the 350D and the 400D have the same plastic shutter system as the 300D?
Does anyone know as this would be a great help as I cant buy without knowing this.
Iv'e even thought of crossing the divide and going for a Nikon d40x? as the whole lack of Canon 'customer care' And there semi literate unhelpful advice via email has made me wonder if I want another Canon?
But then am I being unfair as I understand the shutter being plastic in the 300 what with its race to get in under the 1000 pounds mark at time of release, but was the 300 the only model that had this or is it indeed all the rebel series?
Thanks I didn't know that, The whole things bad timing for me Financially at the moment but I've been looking at maybe getting a refurbished Canon 20D as from what I know this sounds the perfect choice for me and and the cost is around the same as a 350D or 400D body so it makes a lot more sense to buy something a bit more substantial quality wise.
Of course Im still looking But I think your right about getting something a bit more towards a pro model. The whole pixel thing doesn't interest me for my general use as long as I have 6.5 or higher Im fine but high quality is a big must.
