Do I have a bad spark modulator or a bad electrode?

back right burner is not reading flame
clean electrode make sure it is dry
after cleaning if problem still there
may have to replace electrode or spark module

The spark electrode sends a spark to ignite the gas in the burner assembly. If the spark electrode is defective or worn out, it might not produce a spark, or the spark might be too weak to ignite the gas. When you can see the electrodes sparking but not igniting the burner this usually means one of the module plugs needs to be grounded. When that happens the strong sparking is on the module and the arc at the electrode is very weak.
Positioning is also important. Will gas come from burner and be at the spark or is the spark at the tip of the electrode 3" away? It is totally normal to make adjustments to the electrode just like setting the gap on a spark plug.

Replace the surface spark module

The surface spark module is in the ignition circuit for the gas surface burners. When a surface burner control knob is turned to the "Lite" position, it provides voltage to the spark electrodes on the gas surface burners. Replace the spark igniter switch

The igniter switch is an electrical switch on the stem of the gas surface burner control valve. This switch completes a circuit to the surface burner spark module, causing the burner igniters to spark when the burner switch is turned to the Lite position. Replace the burner igniter switch if the burners don't spark when you turn the burner control knob to the Lite position or if igniters spark constantly even when the burner knobs are in the Off position.

For broil burner ignition an oven broiler burner spark electrode is used to ignite the gas. The electrode is a device that sits right next to the broil burner. It functions like a spark plug. As power is applied to it a spark jumps from the spark electrode tip to the to the electrode shield, igniting the gas. If the electrode is broken or worn out the spark may not occur or be intermittent. Visually inspect the electrode assembly for cracks in the porcelain housing or damage to the electrode tip itself. Be aware that a proper ground and the correct polarity of the incoming voltage to the range is necessary for the electrode control to sense the presence of a flame once the burner is ignited.

Well first you need to verify that it is getting proper gas pressure to that burner. Try lighting the burner manually with a match. Does the burner look normal? If the burner flame is really small then you will need to remove the burner head and check the orfice for a restriction. If it looks normal then it probably is a weak spark from the igniter, igniter electrode is out of position, or burner head has dirty ports at electrode causing no ignition. Inspect the burner head. If it is removable then take it off and clean out the burner ports(eyes) with a sewing needle. If it is not easily removable then try doing this while it is still installed on the range. Also try using a wire brush on the electrode to clean any carbon/debris build-up casuing a weak spark. You can also try bending the electrode slightly with a flatblade screwdriver(be careful don't break the elctrode) away from the burner creating a larger spark.

You may have a bad burner switch. If you turn one of the other burner switches to make the spark modules spark look and see if the electrode is sparking at the bad burner. Most of the spark modules send a spark to all 4 burners when activated. If it sparks when another burner is activated open the valve and see if the burner will ignite. If so you probably have a bad burner switch.

You have to determine if it is the electrode or the ignitor module and replace the component. A simple test is to swap the wires on the spark module for the non working one and see if the other electrode still works. If not the electrode is bad, if it does than the module is bad.

A weak erratic spark from one or more electrode usually indicates a bad spark module. No spark from one of the electrodes while the others work properly usually indicates a bad electrode. Inspect the porcelain of the electrode for cracks, chips or burn marks. If there are any, the electrode should be replaced. If one of the burner knobs is turned to the light position and nothing happens, but all the others function correctly, the spark ignition switch for that one burner is likely bad. The switch can be taken out of the system and checked with an ohmmeter. It should close for continuity at the light position only.

Ralph, you need to look at the electrodes at the burners. They might be cracked or dirty. It's very hard to tell sometimes when they are cracked. The burner cap itself has to have a good ground and the wires going to the electrode should be on tight. You can eliminate the spark module by switching the right and left side burner wires at the module. Once you do that, if the right side works ok, but now the left doesn't, you can be pretty sure it's the module...Catriver..post back.
