Cant play
Not a solution as much as clues. I was given a SL PD588 by a friend 'cuz it stopped working. When I got around to checking it out it worked fine. Later it quit. It would rotate the turntable, load up a disc when you hit play, try to play the disc, fail, go to the next disc, etc. I pulled the cover, watched it try, could hear the lens seeking focus but the spindle wouldn't kick in and rotate. After cleaning the lens with no luck, my teenage observer decided he would spin the disc himself and maybe faster would help. Damn, if it didn't work. Sort of reminding the unit what it was supposed to do. However, not a permanent fix, 'cuz periodically it would forget and quit again. I would repeat the drill, basically giving it an assist to rotate the disc (clockwise), (maybe a few times) and it would be back functioning.
I have found the problem occurs if I leave the unit on too long, (especially in pause mode ie disc spinning, for a day or two). So I now power off when I'm thru playing discs.
Just went thru the drill again today, cover off, a little nudge to the spindle top when the disc loaded and back in business. Came to FixYa to see if anybody had an answer.
BTW, you can tell if the disc is playing correctly just by watching the track clock on the display.
Too bad the unit is so big 'cuz that means one is always stacking stuff on top of it.
Finally, and it's not like I haven't entirely dismantled this thing looking for an answer. Inside my unit is my long note on how to disassemble the mechanism.
