Forget it. Unless you dislodge all of the tacky dust from the cyclone cones it will ALWAYS smell. Tumble dryer sheets cover the smell for a week at best. The oils from dog fur are attached to minute rasps of cracked hair which forms dust. This is what stinks and attaches to ALL inside workings of the vacuum and those you cannot get to without a knowledge of dyson and torx screwdrivers.

We have had several Dysons, they are great vacuums but should not be marketed for animals. The nature of a bagless vacuum means this smell will occur. As Dyson have moved away from filters altogether in some of their later ranges, they are even more prone to this collecting of dog stench. Cleaning filters as Dyson suggest is nonsense.

You can't wash all the stink out of filters. They should be replaced frequently. After repairing vacuums for 30 years I'll take a bag over bagless.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

As you'll probably be aware, DC59 has one washable filter, engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum. We recommend washing this at least once a month using cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below:

Always allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it - this may take at least 24 hours. Replacing the filter when damp could cause damage to the machine not covered under guarantee, and could also contribute to any odour coming from the vacuum. It may help to place the filter somewhere warm to dry, such as by a radiator, in an airing cupboard or on a sunny window sill.

Please note, the cyclone pack and clear bin should never be washed or submerged in water as this could cause permanent damage to the vacuum. However, it is possible to separate the clear bin from the cyclone pack as shown below. You can then use a soft brush to remove any fluff or debris from the mesh shroud, and you can wipe the inside of the clear bin with a damp cloth to remove any clinging dust particles. Make sure the bin is completely dry before reassembling.

SOURCE: My Dyson smells like a

I have the Dyson DC 28. After cleaning out the filter multiple times I still had the wet dog smell coming out from the vacuum. I called Dyson's support line. The rep told me to put dryer sheets in the clear plastic bin and let it run for about 5-10 mins, make sure the bin is clear of all debris first. I did it and it worked. Not only is the smell gone, the dryer sheets removed all the remaining dust stuck in the bin. I was happy!

Try buying "Citronella" from an essential oils dealer (maybe eBay?) Apply 6-12 drops on the paper filter element...you'll LOVE the smell.

Can I recharge if the filter is out drying

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

As a precaution, we would normally advise against recharging your DC59 while the washable pre-filter is removed and drying. Additionally, the machine should never be used without the filter in place.

I hope this answers your question. If you'd like any further advice you're welcome to contact the Dyson Customer Helpline directly by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

I can't get the filter to stay in after cleaning

Hi Patty, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC59 Motorhead's pre-filter is engineered to easy to remove for its monthly wash, but should also stay in place securely once it's replaced. In use, the filter will be held in place by the vacuum's powerful suction. When carrying the vacuum from room to room, we'd recommend keeping the machine horizontal, and to avoid carrying it upside down or vertically. It's also worth checking that the black rubber seal itself is clean and correctly positioned.

If the issue continues, I would encourage you to contact our experts directly so we can provide further assistance. You can reach us by calling 1-866-693-9766 (US) or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Our vacuum smells of dog when in use. We have clean out all the filters but it still smells horrible. Any suggestions?

    Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 Animal. You may want to take a look at the page linked below to make sure you've washed the filter correctly - this should be done at least once every 3-6 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow up to 12 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

    http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1324&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

You can also wash the clear bin when separated from the cyclone pack - however, the cyclone pack must never be washed or submerged in water. Make sure the clear bin is totally dry before reassembling the cyclone assembly.

If you need any further help or advice about using or maintaining your Dyson cleaner, please call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US) - one of our experts will be happy to provide the assistance you need.

My dyson animal ball smells. I washed the filter and since then, it smells like either feet or wet dog. How can I get the smell to go away?

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your Dyson cleaner. If your machine smells, it may be because the filters weren't completely dry when you replaced them after washing them. There are a few steps you can take to remedy this:

    • Re-wash both filters, following the steps shown in the video embedded below, and make sure they're totally dry before replacing them. It may help to leave them under a radiator for at least 24 hours.
    • Remove the clear bin and cyclone assembly from the cleaner, and separate the two parts.
    • Wash the clear bin, and try tapping the cyclone assembly gently to dislodge any damp dust which might be caught up inside. Do not wash the cyclone assembly, and make sure the clear bin is totally dry before reassembling both parts and replacing on the cleaner.
Here is a copy of the cleaner's user guide, in case you don't have yours to hand:

    http://media.dyson.com/downloads/us/floorcare/manuals/dc25_opmanual_usa.pdf

Following these steps should help you resolve your issue. However, if you try this and are still concerned about your cleaner, or if you have any difficulties carrying out these steps, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to provide further assistance - you can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).
